I'm so excited! Last week I started being a Standardized Patient for the local medical school. Basically, the med students practice on you. Last week and today was the 2nd year's final exam for complete physical examinations. It was pretty exhausting - each exam had like 300 items head to toe (minus the 'personal' bits!) and takes about an hour to do.

We did 3 a day and by the end of it i was plum tuckered out! I was the patient so not only did they perform all the tests on me but I had to sit on an exam table for 4 hours a day and that is more tiring than it sounds lol
Plus, I'm not used to "going" anywhere to "work".

Even though it was tiring, it accomplished exactly what I needed/hoped for after working at home ALONE for over 7 years - I seriously needed some interaction with other adults and some outside stimulation for brain, body, and spirit! Last week was an exception since we had to do so many students but in the future it will probably just be a few days a month except during final exams time, so it will be perfect to just get me out of the house a little bit. I tell ya, I am recharged mentally!!!!
 
Uh, fun? Will they get to parctice their shots and stuff?
I remember when I was in med school we practiced on each other. I had a LOT of bruising from shots. *sigh*
 
lol NO they do not get to do anything invasive. so no shots or anything like that. Mostly what we do is playing the role of a patient - they give us a disease/disorder and we have to act it out and the med student will interview us to come up with the diagnosis and things like the physical exam where one of us performs as the patient and another watches the exam to score them on whether they perform all of the tests, if they verbalize it properly and perform the test properly.

lol! Vicki, what a unique and different type of job!!! lol!!! so could you go in there with a REAL illness and see if they could diagnose it? (then go to a REAL doctor! lol!!). But sitting/lying down on an examination table would be a bit boring/hard! lol! just gotta remember to not mix up any the symptoms with all the diseases you will be having, the poor students will be totally mystified! but I am glad that you are out and about sweetie, it is nice to get out occasionally to mix with people! :biggrin:
 
Vicki ! it does sound exhausting ... I'm not sure I don't prefer my full time nerve racking job ... LOL But I do get what you mean about adult interaction, it's definitely something I could not do without !

that sounds like fun and you'll learn a lot too no doubt and have lots of giggles amongst each other.
It's nice to broaden the horizon a bit after years of baby talk and it must be a perfect opportunity to hone the acting skills, you could be the patient from hell or the sweetest lady they ever had.

I keep thinking about how difficult I could be as a patient. Lol. I'll bet Vicki is nicer to them than I'd be.
 
Vicki- what a cool job! It will be nice not to have to do it straight through like that, but good to be able to talk to people :D
When I was 6 or 7, I was a patient in a double leg/hip cast for a trainings session. That was tough b/c I wasn't allowed to move LOL

That is really cool Vicki!! I hear ya on getting that interaction with people!! That's the best part of my part time job too!! So happy for you!!

I don't know Sanrdine, 4 hours on a table sleeping sounds pretty nice to me, having someone poking and talking would quite a hassle LOL LOL
 
Always knew you were a *star* - do you have to act in pain etc?

happy for you Vicki!! I know what it's like having no interaction with others - except for DH and dog!

Oh that sounds tiring... Im sure I would have nodded off LOL YAY for not shots though! I had all kinds of painful things in my head at first lol

At first I was thinking, you get paid for that? But omg, four hours on a table? So not my thing. And I would be like Ona and mix up the diseases. Or think up new symptoms: yes, sir, purple spots with golden specks.....
 
What a wonderful job! I´d love to set something up like that for our students. or maybe residents. Would be so kind and help me get some info on how they set this up? website maybe?
 
I so know what you mean by needing a job with other people, adult interaction and generally get out and do something other than in your house...even if one does the same job at home but can get out of the house to do it, I think makes a HUGE difference....
so, am so happy for you :)

now ...about it being tiring....
think about this:
my consultant and my GP (family doctor /General Practitioner_ all are part of University College of London, teaching hospitals...so...I go through the same thing you do, but at least you get paid LOL
