Oscraps

A Note about Art Journaling

pachimac

I solemnly swear I am up to no good!
CHEERY O
My name is Susie, and I am going to be one of your guides through our digital and hybrid art journaling challenges here at the O.

The first thing I want you to know is that I am no expert. I am learning right along with you, so don’t be worried that you aren’t “good enough” yet or that you are too new to do these challenges. I'm pretty new to this style as well, having started in the last year or so.

I PROMISE you that if you play along with us, and give us half a chance, you will find yourself growing in the art journal style. Pretty soon you will notice that paint and gesso are your friends!

Do you know why I can promise you that? I can promise you that because the biggest secret of art journaling is this:

THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO DO IT!

Yes, you heard me correctly. There is no right or wrong, no grades, no “more talented than me” or anything else of that kind of thinking. Stick with us, and you will find yourself enjoying yourself more than you ever thought. Throw away your critical self. Put her in a box and tape that sucker shut!!!

The only rule is to be inspired by the topic we provide. You can scrap it in any style (artsy, clean and simple, pocket scrapping, hybrid, paper...) you wish, with any oScrap kits that you wish. You can get deep with your journaling. You can have no journaling at all. Remember that this is for anyone who wants to be inspired by the topic!

So come on in, get your favorite beverage, your comfy clothes, and your willingness to try something new, and let's have FUN!!

Fabulous explanation of what art journaling is all about Susie, especially that last line, hope everyone jumps in and has lots of fun creating pages that are meaningful to them. :sparkles1::heartpumpred::sparkles1:

I really need to look around before I jump into things :giggle4: This is just what I said a moment ago in the May challenge. And said to a friend. They're more talented than me. I get in my head bad and worry the scrap police will :jail1: me. I swear you wrote this just for me, even though it was last year. I need a box emoji LOL was going to tape critical self up and show you I can follow rules. :giggle4:

Well, "critical self" there aren't any rules either - we just post prompts, quotes, mood boards, etc. to get your creative juices flowing. You just need to jump in and try it. It will get easier and you'll find out that it's very cathartic to pour your feelings out onto a page. If your journaling is too personal or private, you can always just shut that layer off before you post your layout. All of these things are the beauty of art journaling. :heartpumpred: :heartpumpred:

@AK_Tracy Ditto to everything that Cheryl said. I started as a paper scrapper and spent a lot of time making traditional digital pages. You know with rules like- no more than three different fonts, use a triangle graphic design to focus the eye, blah blah blah.
There is nothing more freeing than grabbing a kit with paint and splats and gessos and, slapping on the paper and moving it all around until it *feels* right. Once you get that connection, it's like a switch goes off in your head and heart.

As for talent, -- that's irrelevant. AJ isn't about talent, it's about expression.
Besides, who cares what other people think about our art? (yeah- I do struggle with that but with AJ it's much easier.;) )

Just remember Tracy--I bribed the scrap police with beignets and cafe au lait. They are sitting in the corner with powdered sugar on their faces and fingers. They will be in a glorious, sugar coma for a while, so here's your chance :rotfl:

I forgot you bribed them!! Good thing too cause I jumped in and went for it last night.

You can do it, girl!! You should see some of my first attempts at AJ, but I kept going!! No one is going to judge you here - I promise!!!

I usually just do 1 or 2 of the art journal challenges every now and then but like Susie said, you have to be inspired. If I am not inspired, I just don't feel up to doing anything for that challenge.

This month, (Sept 2024) I was inspired by the theme word FOCUS and I actually managed to do all 4 weekly challenges. I am very proud of myself for completing this challenge.

There is one other benefit to this. As I get to write out my stories every week, I then have condense them down to fit onto the LO, and still make sense. It occurred to me that I can collect these stories to be used in my future memoir. That way I am writing lots of smaller chapters instead of the huge task of sitting down and writing a whole book.

As one example - If you have not seen my Met Married and Moved Layout, (Feb 2024) in my Gallery, I wrote out the whole story of meeting my husband and getting married, which ended up being over 3000 words. Oscraps cant accept anything over 3000 words so you guys only get the short version. But those 3000+ words is now a ready made chapter for my memoir!!

It is such a relief to think like this. I know I want to write and publish my life story (not that I have done anything huge, but I have had to struggle with a lot of medical issues), but writing a whole book is daunting. Writing lots of small chapters is so much easier.

I want to leave a Legacy. I have nothing to show for my life. I kind of need to know that I was on this planet and that I did not just live and die and noone knows about me. Even if this is the only book I write. I don't know why or how, but that is what is driving me. I have to leave a Legacy.

When you get to 60 years old and family members are gone, you kind of start thinking about things like this. Part of this would be why I do genealogy. So my family tree is out there online and my family wont be forgotten. So I have that as one Legacy. But you also need the details as well. Thus I have to write a book about my life.

OK I'll stop rambling now.

Robynne!! That is wonderful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. It has been fantastic seeing each of your pages this month. It makes me over the moon happy that the challenges helped you too!

Expression!! Words. That makes so much sense. I am a writer not an artist. That's why I am drawn to AJ as well as to the regular challenges. Thanks. :D

Oh, I relate to every single word you just wrote. I turned 60 this year and memories and making sure they are REMEMBERED are so important to me right now.
