Every family seems to have at least one person who can turn a piece of fabric into something special. From simple projects like stitching potholders with the family crest to sewing all of the dresses for your wedding party, these are special people. They are artists in their own right.
I remember my grandmother making her own clothes on an antique Singer treadle machine and how excited she was when my mom upgraded her to an electric version. After excitement came “befuddled” though. It was a bit of a challenge to learn to work that foot pedal. These were large, heavy machines that took up A LOT of space. If you’re older than 40, you may have your own memories of these amazing antiques. Later in life when she upgraded to a brand new portable machine she couldn’t have been happier. She hauled that machine when she went to visit her brothers so she could “mend” their overalls or “whip a hem” on their work shirts.
She was a master at mending, making her own clothes, and quilting. She didn’t crochet or knit. Her style was classic and simple but she was a stickler for the details! Her buttons were all perfectly aligned. Her threads always clipped, and she was a master of recycling or repurposing long before those phrases came along. All of her fabric scraps turned into pot holders or hot pads.
Part of our role as digital scrapbookers is to preserve these types of stories for future generations and having the right kit or prompt is half the battle. When you’re ready to scrap the story of your own family seamstress or tailor, or you simply enjoy creating art that tells a universal story, we’ve got some great options for you.
