Up until now the 'Christmas Spirit' hasn't really hit home.......been running around madly getting everything ready for Christmas but the 'IT feeling' just wasn't happening. Of course, going into any store you hear all the Christmas carols/music being played in the background but its something that you tend to tune out though.

So this morning, as I got into the car to come to work I decided to play a Christmasy CD ............

Well I chose A Christams Celebration by the Gaelic singing group Celtic Woman and WOW!!! I can honestly say that my 'Christams Spirit' was finally awakened and I listened to this simply gorgeous music all the 40minutes drive into town.........actually it didn't even feel like 40 mins! I really have to say that if I could actually hear angels sing then it would be this group of talented and gorgeous women!! Pure Heaven to listen to!

When I was growing up my parents listened to all the old crooners, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, so I first memories are of Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney singing Dreaming of a White Christmas. In later years when my sister and I used to share a flat we watched the Andy Williams Show and always watched his Christmas shows! (that's showing my age! LOL!)

So that got me thinking............what are your favourite carols and who they are sung by, performed by??

oh where to start? Great thread Ona!

Let's see I have loaded on my ipod

*crooners - old and new ie. everything from Bing (not Christmas without Bing!) to Diana Krall
*Hi5 ;)
*gotta have Michael Buble
*got the Enya Christmas CD
* loving the Carpenters YES! I stand proud and say I LOVE Karen Carpenters voice (grew up listening to it and blame my older sister)
* kids and I love Louie Armstrong "Zat you Santa Claus"

But my all time FAVE is Judy Garland from 'Meet Me in St Louie' ... have yourself a Merry Little Christmas!

Just love your choices there Helen! Love Michael Buble too! and Enya! are you talking about the Christmas CD from last year? or does she have a new one this year! and I am with you on Karen Carpenter, she had a gorgeous voice.

Oh I love this question Ona!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have to say there is one song that I have to hear...ever since I was little girl.....that I know it's Christmas...Brenda Lee Rockin Around the Christmas Tree!! I love so many types of music!! Almost EVERYTHING...so I would pick from a wide variety...

Helen, I love love Judy Garland too!!! One of my all time fave singers!! BEAUTIFUL!!

I really love the Mannhiem Steamroller Christmas CD's!! from the 80's...

Oh and gotta love ELVIS christmas music!!!!

But absolute favorite is my Dad playing on his steel guitar!! He doesn't do that much anymore, but he stills plays his electric guitar some...I only wish I had inherited just a tiny fraction of his musical talent!! He can play ANYTHING that has strings on it, but has never read a note of music in his life!!! I have seen him play so many instruments!! He used to play with some of the old Country and Western singers and bands..before my brother and I were born. He didn't travel with them, just when they were close by....seems that's the way it used to work in those days!!! Oh Ona.......this has really got me thinking and brought up some great past memories...I need to speak to my Dad and get some questions out to him....Thanks sweetie!!!!!!:p

How topical! Just yesterday the theme for my Christmas journal was songs. Last year I'd done a list of my favs (none of those mentioned - I might add - especially not Hi5!), so not being one to tackle things in a head on way, my sideways glance at the subject came up with this:

oh wow Linda!! how fascinating about your Dad!!! I LOVE steel guitars! not big on C&W music but just love listening to the steel guitar!

You know, I think I might just have to do an LO about music and christmas!! :)

Ona - I love the Celtic Women!! That Cd is fabulous!!!

Another two Favorites of mine are by a group called Point of Grace! Winter Wonderland and A Christmas Story!

Plus you can never go wrong with Rocking around the Christmas Tree either :)

I have always loved the old time classics sung by the the classic singers, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra etc. I still watch White Christmas most years with my mom and sister with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. I love it. I love classic movies anyway. I remember when I found out that my husband had never seen To Kill a Mockingbird. So I went out and rented it for him. He was amazed that he actually liked a black and white movie.

Definitely crooners! for me!

One of my favourite memories is singing White Christmas with my father when it first hit the 'radio' Bing Crosby a must have - Diana Krall is a local girl (yep we have a claim to fame :)
they have even renamed the downtown Pioneer Plaza to Diana Krall Plaza

Wish it had been Michael Buble - mind you he is Canadian

and my DD won't let Christmas go by without Mickey Mouse CD blaring

DH sneaks in Handel's Oratorio (Messiah)

and yeh, Helen, the 'voice' Judy singing have yourself a Merry Little Christmas!

I have different favorites every year! This year's #1 fave songs are Jason Mraz's Winter Wonderland and Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby :) I also love rudolph (of course!) and O Holy Night. I love *most* Christmas music!! Selena, I have never heard the little donkey song, but we listen to sirius on our TV and they play this song 'Dominick the Donkey' a lot... we love singing it at the top of our lungs while running around the house, it is quite the hysterical song. In fact, I made a donkey head to have for our youth Christmas play and named it Dominick :D haha

(Side note: I LOVE YOUTUBE!)

I love Straight No Chaser. The Acapella group that started as a college group and did the really fun 12 Days of Christmas Mix.

Any Manheim Steamroller, any Harry Connick Jr. Christmas....oh man. I better stop!! I'll have my entire iTunes Christmas library on here!

Oh...Cora's Jason Mraz one made me think of this one:

Jack Johnson "Someday at Christmas"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzP0Uhve-_o

Someday at Christmas men won't be boys
Playing with bombs like kids play with toys
One warm December our hearts will see
A world where men are free

Someday at Christmas there'll be no wars
When we have learned what Christmas is for
When we have found what life's really worth
There'll be peace on earth

Sara that is just so touching and truly what Christmas is really all about!! Thanks for the links, will have to go and check these all out!!! :)

OOOh I am getting in the Christmas Spirit!!!
My mom used to play this album by Vera Lynn, with the little drummer boy. It used to make me cry and yesterday I played it on my Ipod, and guess what? My babygirl started to cry.... She's 5 and doesn't understand a word Vera is singing, but the song is so sad that she got tears in her eyes and wanted me to explain what it is all about :-)

I love a song about grandma got runover by reindeer, that is hilarious!!

oh I love this one too! By Slade - its CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISTMAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

I have to check out some of your links Sara-

I love Trans Siberian Orch. I have their 1st 2 CD's and I just love to blast them when I am doing my holiday baking.

There are 2 by Bryan Adams- one you'll here on the radio, the other- man, I haven't heard it is ages. Something about Christmas Time and Reggae Christmas

And as for fun silliness- Snow/Heat Miser!!

My favorite Christmas album has always been the Amy Grant one. I think it reminds me of my childhood because its what my mom always listened to.

I have a love/hate relationship with any Nutcracker soundtrack. I did ballet for 10 years and was in many different productions. I like to listen to it once or twice but I can't do more than that :). Gunar is a big Bing Crosby fan and we always put that on when we put the tree up.

Sara, we LOVE Straight no Chaser.

Kelly that is hysterical because this morning I got an email from our secretaries asking for the James Taylor CD! hee hee!

You know, I was shopping yesterday afternoon and popped into one of our $2 bargain stores and there are all of these oldie type Christmas CD's for just $4.99......two disk yet mind you!! Frank Sinartra, Bing, Dean, Rosemary Clooney ahhh!! I listened to it coming into work this morning and while I used the fast forward button quite a few times (LOL!) I still really enjoyed it! hahaha! not a patch on Celtic Woman though :)

I didn't read through everybody's posts, but my fave carol is Bing Crosby and David Bowie singing Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth. It's an unlikely combo, but the two of their voices give me chill bumps.

As for hymns, I love Joy to the World. It IS such a joyful song, which is what I think the event deserves. "Let every heart prepare Him room, and Heaven and nature sing!" YAY!

Ona what is the name of the Celtic Woman one?

Helen, its called "A Christmas Celebration"........... a couple of years old I think, don't know if they have any more recent chrissy ones. I wanted to check that for myself acutally.
