Welcome to September, and we will be scrapping about the Moon and its meanings! When I first started thinking about this topic I heard the song "Moondance" in my head, by Van Morrison. If you haven't heard it - it's amazing!! One of my favorite songs ever! Let it inspire you...
Moondance by Van Morrison
Then I went to Romeo and Juliet...
"O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon, That monthly changes in her circled orb, Lest that thy love prove likewise variable."
Human kind has been fascinated by the moon the entirety of our existence. The moon is often depicted as a symbol of the feminine. An embodiment of the rhythm of time. A metaphor for the cycles of womanhood. And a beautiful force that can impact everything from the ocean waves to our emotions. The lunar calendar is still used in some traditions today, and for many modern-day moon lovers, its energy marks a deeper connection with our intuition and seasonal nature. Working with the moon gives us an opportunity to regularly check in with ourselves, validate our insights, set new intentions, and plan next steps with greater ease.
Week 1: The New Moon; New Beginnings!
The new moon is when the moon is at its darkest, and is sometimes called the dark moon. It is considered the ‘start’ of the moon cycle and will gradually build and grow into the full moon which takes approx. two weeks. Then it starts to wane and grow smaller, which happens during the last two weeks, thus finishing off its monthly cycle.
While the moon is dark, it is traditionally a time to draw inwards and to contemplate where you are at this point in your life and to perhaps make some decisions in getting rid of things that weigh you down either emotionally or physically. It is a time to set clear intentions for the month ahead like clarifying your goals as the new moon is associated with new beginnings.
Here is a mood board that I made as I was thinking about the Moon:
For this challenge, we ask that you have a circle on your page representing the moon and have it cover 1/4 - 1/2 of the finished page, and let the topic inspire you however and where ever it takes you! On the Waxing and Waning months, you have the choice of making your circle be a full circle, or the shape of your moon in the phase you're scrapping!
Here is my page:
For my page, I started with a foundation page of the rocks and blue sky. I layered the Van Gogh paper under it and used a layer mask to reveal some of the Van Gogh swirls. I used the moon from Celestial Worlds and used an adjustment layer to darken the moon as I am in the New Moon phase. I placed the "the start of..." word art and turned it black and white to match the colors of my page. I then took the figure from Celestial Worlds and used layer --> Layer Style --> Blending Options --> and slid the underlying layer slider by clicking command click and moved the white marker to the left to create a blend. I did the same thing for my text so it wasn't floating on the page. I then placed the clock and the bubbles and blended them into the background using the same technique. I placed the paint swoosh behind the moon and then placed the word art and white glow dots from MoonGlow, and hit save! Voilå!
Here are the items I used for my page:
Rachel Jefferies/Lynn Grieveson | New Connections
Viva Artistry - MoonGlow Kit
Lynn Anzelc | Celestial Worlds
Lynn Anzelc | By The Morning Light
Remember, for the art journaling challenges you can create any style of page. You get to decide what art journaling means to you. It can be a traditionally artsy page, clean and simple, pocket style, junk journal or something else. That is up to you.
Everyone who participates in any of this month's challenges will be entered into a drawing for a $5 gift certificate to Oscraps. You can receive up to four entries into this month's drawing. Remember, you have all month to complete any or all of this month's challenges.
