On Monday we got heavy snow early, but the forecast was for sun in the afternoon. We waited and went out to Monte Vista around 1 pm, when most of the 2-inches of snow had melted. I spotted a canada goose on her nest near the pond overlook, and the male was on guard at a distance.

The main refuge waterway had filled as snow melted during March, but there was still plenty of capacity for more water in the outer marshes. The canada geese were all in pairs, not in larger groups, and it looked like they were ready to nest. There were a lot fewer cattails remaining.
There was more sun on our trip to Alamosa than expected, and with dry roads & light traffic we got there much earlier than in March. We had time before Calvillo's opened to visit both ANWR and Blanca Vista Park. We saw blackbirds, canada geese and a single small bush turning green.

As we packed for our trip to Alamosa, knowing the weather would be very "iffy," we reminded ourselves of that last drive on I-80 in an April snowstorm, so much worse traffic and longer distance. We didn't know what birds we'd see, but we were up for our first April trip to Alamosa.
