On our last day at Alamosa, we left for MVNWR an hour later so we'd get different lighting from our other mornings. We saw all the same birds as on other days, and took our newly discovered byway a third time and knew we'd never go back to the way the GPS would send us.
On Wednesday it was colder but there were a lot more birds. We saw avocets, a congregation of magpies and action among the coots. But the most interesting drama was a male goose fighting with a rival because he got too close (maybe 30 feet away) while he was courting a female.
We both loved being out on the refuge at dawn on a good day. The air was still before hurricane winds later in the day and it was 32 degrees. I wasn't cold, even with an unzipped jacket. I loved watching the coots running and splashing the water but it was still too dark to get photos.
