As y'all know, I'm learning to cook. (stop laughing! ;) )

So, I went to the grocery store today and completely lost my mind on what cut of meat to buy for a particular recipe i wanted to try. I didn't realize it until i was dropping it into the bag of marinade i had mixed up.

it was supposed to be flank steak and i bought brisket.

Now, I know how to cook flank steak, but I don't have a clue how to cook brisket.

HELP! How do you cook brisket?

And, do y'all think the following marinade is going to taste weird on brisket?

Okay...no laughing ~turns head~ :pound:

You want to cook that bad boy for at least 4 hours in the oven!!!

The marinade should be fine....Just gotta make sure that meat isn't TOUGH!!!

Put it in a roasting pan and cover with aluminum foil and cover with tight lid....cook on 300 for 4 hours (250 for 6 hours would be better)

LOL. I was going to say to ask Sally because she made Pioneer Woman's brisket. But Linda seems to have it covered. :-)

For future reference-- brisket is supposed to be very good in a crock pot too.

And Mama V- we would *never* laugh at you.

psssssst- way back when when the O was just vICKI'S BLOG, SHE POSTED THIS PICTURE OF SOMETHING SHE HAD COOKED AND WE HAD TO GUESS (ugh- sorry about the caps) what it was. It was a burnt (as in totally black) plate of nachos. (it was nachos right?? )

Vicki- I am so happy that you are trying to cook :D:D:D

Nana L, Thank you doll!!!! I feel better. Thanks for the reassurance. I don't have a roasting pan (atleast I don't think I do. I'm not really sure what that is.)

Kathryn, that makes me feel better.

Chris, I'm trying it in the crock pot. Not sure I'm diggin' the smell of the marinade though. And, I've got about 10 more hours of smelling it....

Here's the post Chris mentioned :)

I'm with the crock pot. I think the marinade would work but if you are not sure BBQ always works with brisket. yay for trying to cook, especially if it is not your thing generally.

Also cheaper meat is not always good quality meat. So you can be the greatest cook in the world it will still be tough if it is bad quality meat. I rather spend $2 more for instance if I know it is better quality at least you have a good meal :)
I didn't know how to cook 12 years ago but I watched A LOT of Food Network TV and learned so much from there; now people love eating my food :)
SO maybe you need to start turning your TV on that channel
And I love the slow cooker too - especially with brisket or stews it is the best ever!!

So glad I'm not the only one who didn't know what brisket was! I, too, had to look it up :-?

Happy cooking, Vicki, or perhaps more importantly, happy eating.

I agree the crock pot always makes everything so tender :) Good Luck Vicki hope it comes out good :)

Yes...the crockpot does tenderize....BUT......now that's big but from a person who has tried it all!!!....the crockpot waters down so much that it takes away the flavor...IF...and that's a big IF too for a lot of people....IF you have the time to have your oven on for 4-6 hours....it will be so full of flavor!! I cook ALL my meats like this....and other than a grilled steak....we never have to pull out knife for anything....and I am the spice queen....so I load everything up for flavor.

The only thing I cook in the crockpot is soup.

That's why I use broth instead of water :D

Vicki- how did it come out?

I am cooking a chicken in my crock today. My old (ish) one died. Not really died, but my cat pooped on it, so it got tossed. Gary found one for $32 on some deal-site, 6 qt with an internal temp probe. I am going to try the chicken in it- the recipe said to not add any liquid and to raise the chicken up on rolled up foil so it doesn't sit in the juices. We'll see :)

OK, so how sad is this - I had to look up what a Crock pot was too! Clearly, I have spent far too long in Asia, where boiling rice for 20 mins counts as slow cooking - hehe.

Linda I have never cooked a brisket either....so spice queen hook me up!! I want to shock my hubby with a good meal!

Can you share a recipe with me? How do you do it? What temp in the oven? How will I know it's done? How long do you let it rest??

*hahahahaha* So many questions....

Just so ya know- the chicken came out really good. Very moist- not stringy like chicken sometimes come out of the CP. I wrapped potatoes in foil, put them on the bottom of the pot, seasoned the chicken with paprika, garlic, olive oil, thyme, parsley, and threw that on top. It cooked on High for about 4 1/2 hours. Really good, and tonight I have leftover chicken to make quesadillas :)

I will write it down for you....I sort of just do it from my head!!! HAHA...that could be bad!!
