Tattoos

Last weekend , I scrapped a layout with a tattoo designed by my son. He is a tattoer in his freetime and also have some tattoos himself. I have never liked tattoos and we had a discussion about it. He told me that Sweden is the world's most tattooed country. And aside from some primitive people on the earth, people of Stockholm is the world's most tattooed people (33 percent between the ages of 18-49 years).

I became curious and wondering if it´s common in the country where you live? And do you have a tattoo?

oooh...you'd be surprised how many (even conservative) people have a tattoo here in US!!

I never liked them much, I often felt that getting a tattoo gives people some false feeling of accomplishment instead of them going and actually doing something...but that's just me...
(imagine a girl in a beautiful wedding dress - seeing a tattoo on her back just spoils it for me)

Hi - I have never understood the need for a tattoo but my son who is a Marine has many tattoos and several are tribute to fallen friends and his wife has a lizard down her back that actually did not really ruin her look in her wedding dress. I was shocked but she was stunning. I know many young adults who have small tattoos that are mostly hidden. I think my worry has always been what will it look like as your get older and your skin is not the same.

I didn't really have anything against them. Just thought I didn't want one for me for a long time. After my mom died though...I changed my mind. I have a very personal one that relates to her. But it is on my upper thigh. The only time anyone else sees it besides my husband is when I go swimming.

I don't have anything against them but prefer if they are tasteful and not trashy looking.

I do have one very small one between my shoulder blades that only shows if I want it to show ;)

always chatty at the O!!
I have two tattoos. I just got one yesterday. I love them. I love how they look. I will be getting more. They are addictive. My husband is in the military so we are surrounded by tattooed people. I had a hard time figuring out where to get my tattoo at because there are so many places being a military town.

As far as tattoos go...I love color. I like black for tribal stuff but I love lots of color.

Feeling at hOme!
No tattoo for me, I can't imagine to have something tattooed on my skin for the rest of my life! Plus I have some allergies, so not sure how my skin will react...

I don't have many people around me that have tattoos, but I think there are really some beautiful ones... as long as they are not too huge!!

I wanted to get a tattoo - then I met my husband. He made some really ugly (homemade) tattoos in his teens, with not so very nice motifs. He's had a very hard time with these, and for over 30 years never worn anything with short sleeves. Finally last year, he got the courage to go and get it fixed. There's a really talented tattoo artist in our neighbor town that has made new tattoos over the old ones. (Since they were homemade, they were too deep into the skin to get it removed surgically or with laser.)

Now he has three fantastic tattoos, and is planning on a 4th as soon as it's gets warmer again. And he's bought a whole bunch of t-shirts for the summer :)

Coolest tattoo I've ever seen is my cousin's. He's got his parents wedding photo tattooed on his shin. He's a biker, he has tattoos all over the body :)

Gah! I love tattoos! I have 6? I have a couple of LO's of them. Each one has very special meaning to me. One for my marriage, each of my kids, one that signifies strength and courage to change and faery wings on my back. On Friday I'll be getting tattooed again, but I don't think markers for radiation therapy is really what I wanted!!!
Tattoos are extremely common here in NJ, even at the high school level. My kids have some friends/classmates who have several tattoos already (some are going to be regretted down the line, I am sure-- especially the one girl who has a misspelled word on it...), but I refuse to sign permission for them to get it done before they are 18.
However-- for cait's 18th birthday, we are going to get matching mickey mouse ears :)

I can't imagine sitting still for the tattoos. Don't they hurt? I don't think I can bear the pain. I'll probably be too scare so no tattoos for me.

no tattoos for me , it doesn't attract me at all.
It seems to be a fashion nowadays, like piercing many years ago.

I only hope that the people who have chosen to have tattoos don't come to the healthservice in years to come to have them removed again .( here's grumpy old woman speaking)

During our travels through Africa lightyears ago we saw several tribes with tattoos on their faces but that was tradition to differentiate them from other tribes . Or think about the cultural meaning of the Aboriginal tattoos

It hurt. I won't lie. But I did ok. I think it would depend on your pain tolerance.

No tattoo's for me, I just have this image in my head of a beautiful rose tattoo sagging in a some distorted way as I get old, I mean older.....

I don't like seeing the excessive tattoo's that some have (like one I saw last weekend with a woman that had lines tattooed in the back of her legs too look like nylon seam, with a garter belt hooking it at the top....way to gross for me), but a cute nicely placed one isn't bad.

It´s enjoying to read what you´re thinking about tattoos and I´m not surprise at some of you have more than one.

I love tattoos, too. I have one (and was very careful to choose a spot that won't suffer when I get old) and also love them on others. What I don't like are tattoos that are just all over the body without any cohesive thought behind it, like a tribal today, a Chinese sign tomorrow and a skull the day after.

No tattoos here for a few reasons. First, I am totally against pain and have a low pain tolerance (did you know most redheads do?). Second, my church is against tattoos. Third, my husband finds them unattractive.

Oh, I had no idea there were churches that were against tattoos. (I studied theology at uni - it's my geeky side :) )

O sO silly
I do think of it sometimes but I always change my mind about a design so I figure I shouldn't do it cause I might get bored of it quickly but it would be too late lol.
Maybe fake tattoo would be good for me lol

Also, in Japan it is seen as something related to Yakusa (Japanese mafia) and tattooed people can't access public bath for example. Not that I would go to public bath anyway but I know if some people would see my tattoo they would feel uncomfortable.

France I don't know how many people get tattooed but I did see a few new shops in the area about it so I guess it's popular now.

So sorry that your arm itches, clara!

I'm not against tattoos, actually I wanted one years ago but I mentally saw the tattoos on the skin of my aged ex father in law. My pain tolerance is also very low so no tattoos for me..

I love tattoos and I love finding out the meaning behind them when people have them. I probably know more people with them than without them. I have 6 (tattooed 7 times because one was an add-on). But if I want them to be, they are all coverable. Probably the most noticeable one is on the inside of my wrist. I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I'd like another if I can just find or create the perfect design.

Here you go. So...I wanted it to look like water colors and it turned out great. I'm not so sure the pics are the best. But I picked poppies because of their representation of the military and the blood shed. I also like the dandelion because it's like a Phoenix in a flower. I've got to add a few things but my arm started swelling up a bunch.

Thanks Clara for showing your pics!

I´m also interested about the meaning behind them (IntenseMagic mentioned this in her post). There can be a story that you never can guess. Last weekend, I was told about a girl who had a tattoo along the outside of her leg. She had been tattooed over a long scar and she had always been ashamed of it. But now, she was able for the first time, to go in skirt and shorts and be proud.
