Anyone watching the Opening Ceremony?

Typical British weather... it's raining in London. Luckily not where I am!

I can wait to show it to Ben. He's in that stage though that he won't think it's as special as I do!! LOL

I don't even know when it starts and what channel. Best go figure that out and hope I'm not too late!

I was fortunate enough to meet one of the alternates for the men's gymnastics team at a 4th of July party. He was offered a beer or other drink and he declined just saying he had to train in the morning. Well, later on when he went into the house, his fiance told us he was training every morning because he was leaving for London in a couple of weeks because he was an alternate. So, of course when he came back out we all peppered him with questions. He was quite humble and honored and everything. I gotta admit, I was a little in awe of meeting someone who even made the alternate team. I mean wow, the dedication and focus these people have is inspiring.

We plan to tune in. Of course we'll be watching the taped version here in the states. Can't wait to watch swimming, gymnastics and more!

My first job out of college was with a financial planner who had been goalie on the men's USA ice hockey team in the 60s. It was really neat to hear his stories - trading gear with athletes from other countries at the closing ceremonies.

We will be watching!! I LOVE THE OLYMPICS!! and Cameran, being 8 yo, he loves most of it too....We watched a lot of the US finals for who got onto the teams...I truly admire these young people!!!! Just knowing how they have dedicated themselves, and most starting at such very young ages!!! :hail:

Vicki...how cool to meet someone like that!! If he made alternate this time...he is still really good!! and if something happens and he competes...You can say "I KNOW HIM"....but he will probably be full on the team next go round in 4 years!

All right...what did I miss before the industrial revolution part and the forging of the rings?? I forgot to turn it on at the right time!!!

The countryside and the choir of children from Scotland, Wales and N Ireland. I thought the beginning felt a bit like the Eurovision Song contest.

It was a good opening, very British I have to admit!

I hate not having cable. I love watching diving. In 1992 a girl I trained with was in the Olympics for diving and I know a couple of the names still from back when I competed in the junior competitions. This is probably the last year I will though. I was very fortunate back in the day to have met a number of people who were big in the sport and now this year I don't have freaking cable!! Geesh!! Hopefully I get to watch at least a little bit. I'll have to look up the schedule, although I will be passing on the synchronized diving event. It just irritates me.

I hate how you can't just watch one sport and they break it up so that you have to watch like 5 sports at a time. :)

Is it wrong to admit that I slept through pretty much all of the opening ceremony? I did see the forging rings bits, but I didn't see anything after that ... my head hit my pillow & I was out for the count!

I believe Shimelle Laine (well known UK scrapper / crafter) is actually volunteering at the Olympics this year and she was at last night's ceremony ... she uploaded some AMAZING photos to her Instagram account!

I saw a bit of it but got bored with all those countries filing past, so I read a book instead.

the photos of the fireworks are amazing. however, the "uniforms" of the USA team are a disgrace. who designed those thuggish things? they look like the military of some 3rd rate dictatorship. Canada's team looked excellent! as did Greece's.

My understanding is that Ralph Lauren designed the uniforms and they were a take on the "uniforms" they wore last time London hosted the olympics.

Yup. Ralph Lauren. Did you hear the big controversy that he had the uniforms made in China???? He promised that the next time he did something like this, he would have them made in the USA. What an idiotic move. Like it wouldn't come out that they were made in China!! And though ours aren't awesome, they're better than Spain's!! Those look like a costume from a Will Ferrell movie!!

We are limited to network TV, but I think they do a decent job. Right now we're enjoying women's volleyball (I played in high school so I find it fun to watch). We love swimming (our boys are on swim team). LOVE gymnastics. I can watch it all! I love all of the stories that bring tears to my eyes!

SO LOVE THE SWIMMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!! USA ROCKED IT LAST NIGHT!!! I almost felt bad for Michael Phelps...but he has won so much and is very wealthy now because of his accomplishments...so I think it's time to let someone else have the glory!!

I think he is a bit cocky too. Probably well earned, but still. If someone asks you if you think you will be the greatest Olympian of all time, you don't say, "I'll tell you after the race." You say something like, "I wouldn't ever put myself up there...there's a lot more to being a great Olympian than winning medals."

But that's just my opinion.

Loved the opening ceremonies, although I think ours were better!! But then I am a bit biased!! The Olympic Caldron is so much nicer than ours was here for the Winter Olympics I thought ours was very ugly!! Really think they could have put it where everyone can enjoy it though. Oh my I am very criticizing aren't I !! :becky: Canadians not doing so well so far, guess we are better at the winter sports!!
