Our little Fox Terrier, Chewie, has been sick for the past two weeks. Had taken him to the vet around 10 days ago, she thought he had a 'sore' neck, as in infection, gave him an antibiotic shot and charged us $340, thank you very much!
He steadily had gotten worse, Reg had rung her a couple of times and all she said was "well you will have to bring him back in and we will need to do more tests". Not a friendly "beside manner" at all!!!
Last Friday night he took a turn for the worse so we rang a different vet, he asked a lot of questions over the phone and felt confident that Chewie would survive the night and to bring him in the next morning. Reg took him in and he had to leave him there....as the vet lives out of town himself, he took Chewie home with him, put him on a drip. He did more blood work and rang us on Saturday night to tell us that his first impression was that it could be leukemia because of the abnormal white blood cells.
You can imagine how devastated we were! Chewie and Reg are inseparable, Chewie is Reg's little mate and goes everywhere with him and has done so for the past 11 years! He was beside himself, we both were I guess, but the thought of losing that little terror was just heartbreaking.
The vet had said that Chewie's white blood count 'while normal' was exhibiting abnormal cell shape which made him think of leukemia.
Sunday morning Reg suddenly thought of an incident a few weeks ago, terriers are fabulous rat hunters, Chewie had killed one and the rat had bitten Chewie on the mouth. Rats carry a variety of diseases. Reg looked up the internet and sure enough the listed symptoms matched what Chewie was having, plus one particular disease caused abnormalities in the white blood cells. Reg rang the vet, the vet said it was a possibility, so started him on different antibiotic injections and guess what!! Chewie is responding!!!
We went to see him yesterday and the vet happily told us that Chews had eaten some chicken and had kept it down..............the first bit of food in 15 days!!!! When we saw him he just wagged his little tail and stood up to greet us, then had to lie down again as he is so weak but he was so much better, clearer in the eyes and just looking better!!! So we have left him there a couple more days and hopefully will be bringing him home on Wednesday, even though we will have to give him injections ourselves for a few days!!
We are JUST SO HAPPY!! He is such an important part of our lives, and while we know that he will have to go one day, it just seemed too soon so we are thankful for the extra time we have been given!! All the family are thrilled and I think that Chewie is one little dog that is going to be spoiled rotten at Christmas!!!
Just wanted to share the story with you all!!! xxx
