Feel good story!!!

Our little Fox Terrier, Chewie, has been sick for the past two weeks. Had taken him to the vet around 10 days ago, she thought he had a 'sore' neck, as in infection, gave him an antibiotic shot and charged us $340, thank you very much!

He steadily had gotten worse, Reg had rung her a couple of times and all she said was "well you will have to bring him back in and we will need to do more tests". Not a friendly "beside manner" at all!!!

Last Friday night he took a turn for the worse so we rang a different vet, he asked a lot of questions over the phone and felt confident that Chewie would survive the night and to bring him in the next morning. Reg took him in and he had to leave him there....as the vet lives out of town himself, he took Chewie home with him, put him on a drip. He did more blood work and rang us on Saturday night to tell us that his first impression was that it could be leukemia because of the abnormal white blood cells.

You can imagine how devastated we were! Chewie and Reg are inseparable, Chewie is Reg's little mate and goes everywhere with him and has done so for the past 11 years! He was beside himself, we both were I guess, but the thought of losing that little terror was just heartbreaking.

The vet had said that Chewie's white blood count 'while normal' was exhibiting abnormal cell shape which made him think of leukemia.

Sunday morning Reg suddenly thought of an incident a few weeks ago, terriers are fabulous rat hunters, Chewie had killed one and the rat had bitten Chewie on the mouth. Rats carry a variety of diseases. Reg looked up the internet and sure enough the listed symptoms matched what Chewie was having, plus one particular disease caused abnormalities in the white blood cells. Reg rang the vet, the vet said it was a possibility, so started him on different antibiotic injections and guess what!! Chewie is responding!!!

We went to see him yesterday and the vet happily told us that Chews had eaten some chicken and had kept it down..............the first bit of food in 15 days!!!! When we saw him he just wagged his little tail and stood up to greet us, then had to lie down again as he is so weak but he was so much better, clearer in the eyes and just looking better!!! So we have left him there a couple more days and hopefully will be bringing him home on Wednesday, even though we will have to give him injections ourselves for a few days!!

We are JUST SO HAPPY!! He is such an important part of our lives, and while we know that he will have to go one day, it just seemed too soon so we are thankful for the extra time we have been given!! All the family are thrilled and I think that Chewie is one little dog that is going to be spoiled rotten at Christmas!!!

Just wanted to share the story with you all!!! xxx

This is our terror, Chewie!

I'm glad he got well in the end! It's so devastating when a pet dog falls ill especially one that has been closed to the family. I lost my chihuahua to cancer but she was very old then and we had her for more than 15 years (during my teenage years)! You can imagine our loss when we had to put her down.
Recently acquired a pooch and even though he has been with us for only a month, he is already part of us and we bring him out wherever we go! Everything now centres around him!

aaaaw! I'm so glad he is doing better!

Years ago, we had a rat terrier and there was a house behind us that had been vacant for years. Someone bought it and started renovating and all of the neighbors all of a sudden had mice - YIKES! Well, every night, Bookmark (her name because she was tiny as a bookmark when we got her) would catch 5-10 mice and leave them as gifts for me in my favorite chair for me to find every morning (NOT PLEASANT lol) so, yes, I'm familiar with terriers being excellent mousers lol

I'm so glad Chewie is making a recovery, Ona, what a relief for you both.

One of mine, Mungo, a Jack Russell/Springer Spaniel accident, caught a roe deer the other day and when he finally let go, the deer kicked him hard as it escaped. He felt pretty sorry for himself for some days, so we suspected cracked ribs, but 4 wks later he seems to be back to his usual self - although he's only managed to catch one squirrel this week, definitely lower than his normal count.

Ellen and Phylis, I am glad that Reg remembered about the rat, he normally forgets everything else and yeah, Reg can be a real detective on the internet when he has to be! lol! I think his doctor must groan every time Reg walks through his door!!! lol!

Ona!!! Happy happy news!!! Chewie looks like he is a doll-baby!!!! Props to Reg for caring so much and researching it all.
And what an awesome vet to bring him home with him, too.

Puppy-kisses from Ravyn to him!

PS: I told Ray the other day that I think she needs a boyfriend, she always looks so lonely. We should set up a play date. No worries-- she's fixed. hahahahah!!!

hahaha!! Bookmark, what a cute name!!! oh yeah, they really are good at catching mice aren't they! We have mice come into the house during winter and Chewie tracks them down and kills them, and being a very good boy he will actually carry the body outside for me!!! :-D

He has been taught not to chase our wallabies though, and they will come to the back door for a feed of bread. Chews 'hates' to share, so when we are throwing out the dry stale bread to them he will go and sit with them and eat the bread as well!!! lol!
