I may be new here, but it seems to me that we don't see that many layouts with journaling anymore...isn't that what scrapbooking is all about? Am I wrong? Don't we do all this so that we can pass down stories to the younger generation? Maybe I'm out to lunch. What do you think?

I would disagree that is what scrapbooking is about, I dont often journal, but yet sometimes I do. For me, scrapbooking is not only about the memories its also a creative outlet. And often the title and the picture itself captures everything I want to encompass on a page :) I dont think there is a right or wrong way to scrapbook :)

Well, I journal a lot. In fact, I have a reputation for being a bit of a motor mouth. And sometimes there just isn't room for photos, like here:

https://ozone.oscraps.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=83728&cpage=2&ppuser=10728

and here:

https://ozone.oscraps.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=59460&cat=500&ppuser=10728

and here's one where the photo is an incidental and not really necessary:

https://ozone.oscraps.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=43175&cat=500&ppuser=10728

But I'm with Cat on the it takes all sorts LO wise. Funnily enough, I'm doing more LOs at the moment with less journalling on, mostly because I want to showcase designers work without my "story" getting in the way. And I'm finding this surprisingly liberating - and quick! But generally speaking, most of my LOs start with the story, followed by the photo and not the other way round.

really Selena...do ya think? (re: motor mouth....hehehe) ... never. We love your words.

I agree with Cat and Selena....sbing has become so much to so many. I am always up for a good scrap therapy session and laying it all out on the line, but I have also become a big fan of the minimalist approach and the power of a photo or a few select journaling items packing a real punch.

And I am with Selena, the best LOs have sensational photography with a story to be told behind it.

;)

yes, ITA with y'all! It depends on the LO and the purpose behind it. Sometimes I need to journal, sometimes the LO is just for the enjoyment and enhancement of the photo.

But either way- its all good!

I agree with you 100%...I write A LOT in my LO! I am a "heavy writer", but for me as it is for you, is all about leaving a record for future generations, and a way to write down things I dwell with in my life...I am seing so many "fantasy" LO outthere, beautiful LO's! but you can see in the DST gallery mostly, that 90% don't have any journaling, you don't know the who, the why, the when, the where...nothing. I myself did few of these, I wanted to take myself out of the box, and it's nice to make LO's without much thinking in the journaling, it's easier, for me it was, and the fantasy are so much fun! but I am not going to rely on these, it's not my main purpose. I guess that it's all about your purpose and the why you scrapbook and there is not right or wrong if it serves you...

They say, "a picture is worth a thousand words" and I believe that sometimes, so, no, I don't always journal on my layouts. I will typically always put the who, what, where somewhere on there - sometimes it's small and off in a corner, but its typically there. Then there are those where the journalling is focus, rather than the photos.

To me, scrapbooking is personal to whomever is doing it. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It's your art and your memories - however you choose to express it is what is right for YOU. Does that make sense?

I think this is a personal matter. For me the story is in the wordart and the picture, but hey, when I was young, the whole diary thing did not work for me either :p

Thanks for all of your replies!! I can see what you mean about the picture sometimes telling the whole story, I too have done a few layouts with no journaling at all and I think that the work that digital scrapbookers are doing now is absolutely breathtaking! It was just a personal observation that it seems journalling is just not being done that much anymore. :)

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I have done pages that had no photos and were all journaling. And I have done plenty of pages with one powerful photo that needed nothing other than a date.

I think it depends on the subject of the page, for me anyway. :)

The great thing about scrapbooking is that we can each do what moves us. If you want to journal on your pages - you are free to do so and create what you love. And if someone wants to omit journaling than they can do what makes them happy and leave it off the page. :) Scrapbooking is so versatile!

always chatty at the O!!
I think everyone has their own idea of how to express their lives in a LO. I was never a big journaler, because my handwriting is atrocious and it took me awhile to start adding journaling when I switched to digi. Oftentimes I just want to remember the event and a date and a title are sufficient. Othertimes I think a lot needs to be written. Scrapbooking is so many things to so many people...history, a creative outlet, a job...whatever it is to whoever is doing it is the right way to do it. I have never seen a "wrong" way to scrap. I figure when I scrap...these are my memories and most of the time I don't need to do much journaling because there isn't much else to say after the page is done. Other times there is just no room and other times I have to get some journaling down to make the page.

I too think scrapbooking is different for everyone. I know for me, just the creative outlet.. to be able to sit down and create and design art is a big part of it. But I'm definitely a journaller too. I'm an event scrapper.. I always feel one little tidbit of my life should be documented on each page. But I always see lo's in the gallery.. with very little journalling on them and they just jump out at me as beautiful. ("non event") .. that's what I'm calling it! ;) .. and I think there is more of that now than there used to be. ?? .. but what do I know. :)

I agree, Amanda...definitely a creative outlet. Sometimes I feel like creating something more for art-sake...sometimes it's more for recording purposes. Just depends on the picture, the supplies, my mood...all that stuff. :) But I do think that art/non-event style pages are definitely a huge trend in digi scrapping. They certainly are beautiful!! I love seeing all the different styles...so much gorgeous inspiration! :)

Like a lot of you I choose when to journal and when not too. Sometimes a photo just 'speaks' to me as to how it should be used in the layout....... don't know if that makes sense to anyone ! I scrap in 8x8 layouts so that I can print them off myself. For some layouts I include a page that may contain just journalling which might be something sentimental or personal that I want to convery to a specific person....... I then print this out, put a little 'pull out' tab at the top and then slip it in behind the layout. In this way I am not 'cluttering' up the layout but at the same time leaving some thoughts behind for the next generation. My daughter and all of my three son's wives have their 'own' albums so when they want a particular layout I print it out + the journal page (if there is one) and they pop it into their albums. ! I sometimes feel like I spend most of my weekend printing out layouts 'cause they ALL want a copy of everything!! Anyway, this is just another suggestion for those people who like to journal but not always on the layout itself.
