Crediting Etiquette

Hi Girls,

I have a question for you......

How do you credit a designer who's items you bought in one shop, but who has since ceased to sell at that shop, and for which you may not be aware of where they have gone?

And for that matter, how do you credit a designer who has retired from designing altogether?

I've always added credits to my LOs thus:

String & WordArt: Paislee Press & Audacious Designs Collaborations, oscraps.com, Photogenic
“Biscuit” Alpha: Jan Crowley, “Queen of Quirk” twopeasinabucket.com, Monkey Do
“Tin” Apha: Debra Tope, oscraps.com, Antique Wood Alpha 2

This particular LO is a classic "problem"; the Monkey Do alpha I bought here at Oscraps, and luckily I just happen to know that Jan Crowley now sells from 2Peas, and Debra Tope has retired altogether. But if I wasn't aware of these designers status, I would in theory be crediting them "incorrectly". And in this age of piracy I really want to be seen to be doing all I can to credit correctly.

So I'm interested to know how you given due credit when a designer has disappeared out of the shop.

Thanks girls.

If I know a designer has retired, like Sweet Gen, I'd say:
Sweet Genevieve Designs, New Years 09 kit, retired

then I'd feel sorry for all the people who couldn't buy her wonderful stuff!! :)

If they've moved to another store, I'd try to credit them where they are selling now...
I noticed in Scrapbook Trends, Emilie Ahrens had a gorgeous digi LO that credited Paislee Press Designs to her Blog address...that may be a good idea, too, for those mobile designers...(altho Liz is not mobile...just sayin'!)

ETA: I have to say, a lot of times, I just put the designer's name and name of the product. If someone wants the product, they can google...

BUT i'd like to hear from the designer's point of view...

I stopped putting store info just because with designers coming and going its hard to keep up... to properly credit all you really need is the designer name and kit/product name...

I tend to credit just the designer & kit name too ... only because I've found that some galleries / forums don't like it if you mention other stores by name!!!

I do the same. I only credit the store if it is a CT LO. Otherwise I just say name and kit/product name.

How about fonts...I have noticed most people don't credit fonts. Thoughts on that??

I've only ever purchased one font, by Darcy Baldwin, and I credit her everytime. But with those I've downloaded for free I mention the font name, but not the download site.

I just always credit the designer and add whatever store they are selling at if I know. If I don't know the designer name is fine. I figure this is the day of google - if they want it that bad they'll google them :) *LOL*

And for that matter, how do you credit a designer who has retired from designing altogether?
Again I just credit the designer. I never put retired before...I guess I should.

Fonts? Hmmmm I also have only bought from Darcy and then I do give her credit.

I always credit the stores and products for my CT's but not necessarily so for my other layouts...just the designer and products ...and I don't put retired if they don't create any longer....and as for fonts...I am terrible about putting what font I used....TERRIBLE!!

I pretty much do the same as all of you. I link back to the store if I am posting here or at DST.
Fonts- I try to give the name, but almost all of my fonts are from dafont.com
Brushes/styles/patterns- if I have the name are the artist (I don't always have them for the freebies) I try to credit that as well.

For the most part, 99% of my stuff is from the O so I never really bothered with crediting the shop, since I try to link them here.

As for the retired/moved artists, I feel like lots of you- people can always google or post an ISO thread.

Sally- LOL and Yes, ITA!

I usually put: kit - designer name - shop, because most of the designers ask to include the shop name. I guess if you know the kit was retired, it's nice to add "retired".

I try to always credit Fonts, but just the name of the font (sometimes I forgot, but now I'm more careful with this). I think it's nice because I like when other named the font so I can look for them in internet.

And what about photo actions ? Do you credit them ? I saw some people doing it and seems nice...

While I'm working in a Lo I use the "File Info" in PS to register the credits... so it makes things easy when I have to upload in the galleries.

Unless it is a CT page, I only credit kit and designer. If it is for a CT, depending on the gallery (whether open or not) I credit kit, designer, and shop.

If they are retired, I don't mention that.

For fonts, I have only purchased one and if I use that one I do credit the designer and font name. I don't always remember to credit free fonts.

For photo actions, I do credit those. I use Lightroom quite a bit to edit my photos (well, 100% of the time now!) and I do not usually credit Lightroom or the free preset I use. I should, though. I have had a lot of people ask where I get my presets, so I should just credit with it. ;)

I always just credit designer and kit, unless it's CT or Promotional for some reason. Like Sally said, they can usually Google and find the kit. I try to remember to credit the font if it's a non-system installed font. If it's something I've downloaded or purchased. Again, i just always put the name because people can usually Google and find the font. Sometimes I just forget to put the font on the credits though. =)

Thanks girls for all your suggestions.

I have a Word document where I list every kit, by designer name, and the shop info helps me know where it's located on my hard drive. I then copy & paste credits into another monthly document so that a) I can paste these into my .psd LO, b) I can copy & paste into forums and c) I can print out and stick on the back of my printed LO.

Maybe I should extract out the shop info, when posting to forums.

With regard to Lightroom & actions, I try to credit, even the freebies, and especially with "clever" Lightroom presets (which are all freebies) but as Tali said, people often ask. But often I find I've come about a photo look entirely by accident (right, Tali?!) and can't always remember the steps I took.

Man alive Selena. I can barely get myself together to even scrap. I'm jealous that you can be so organized!!!

LOL Sara! I might plenty of scrapping done, but I don't clean my house!!!

LOl! Selena!! I am so glad you said that!!! Now when you come to visit me you won't run away cause my house is a MESS!!! hahahaha!!!! :)

I tend credit the kit, designer and shop where I can. I keep track of all the stuff I use by opening a Notepad file (ships with Windows) and then just copying and pasting the info from the element or paper I used, then just tidy up the Notepad text file, save it the same name as my LO so then I have it to copy and paste my info into the galleris etc. I try to credit the freebies as well, if I remember where they come from!!! :)
