Winter Blues?

Does anyone else suffer from this? Its most common for people who live in darker climates, but for me its about the cold. In Alberta we have long cold winters with quite a bit of sun, but the cold really affects me and every January & February i get depressed to a certain degree. I function but its forced and I feel blah until we get some warmer temps then it just disappears. It doesn't seem to help if I bundle up and spend time outside or even exercise, I get it. Anyone else have this?

yeah i get a little cranky but more blah and true "depression feelings" of sadness for no real reason. Today I am feeling a bit better so hopefully I am coming out of it. ugh . Thanks P!

oh yes...might sound funny coming from someone in California, but it is cold for us here in the winter, and for me at least, this means a certain amount of physical pain (arthritis) and so even if I am not consciously hurting enough to take something, there is this sub conscious level that turns into, as Phylis says...crabbiness!

exercise...supplements (or the right food), sleep, you know, all the things we are supposed to do to take care of ourselves, will all hopefully help!
Hope your spring arrives soon Heather and Phylis!

Well Heather I do miss the sunshine of the prairie in the winter, but sure don't miss the cold!!!! Out here on the Wet West Coast it is the dreary cloudy days and constant damp chill that we have to contend with. I so suffer from vitamin D deficiency but just getting out in the fresh air seems to help me. Hope that you get out of your blue mood soon, remember that soon it will be time to visit us here in the West again before you know it!:becky:

The darkness is really getting to me. Good thing we have lots of snow, cuz it brightens things up a bit. We haven't seen much sun lately. I'm beginning to think the sun is a myth :)

I'm so glad the days are starting to get noticeably longer now. That really helps to alleviate the winter blues. We get a lot of low cloud around here in the winter which makes things pretty gloomy, although its not usually that cold.

I definitely need sunshine to stay cheerful. I just get really tired when there is no sunshine! And yesterday, when we got to Des Moines to drop off the rental car, it was really cold, really windy and gray! I told Brian that the cold air was actually taking my breath away. I asked if this always happened. He just looked at me...which I guess means it always happens.

Definitely did me good to get to some sunshine and perfect weather. Now, to wait for the big snowstorm coming Thursday...

always chatty at the O!!
In Washington winters are harder for me. A February vacation always helps me with the winter blues. Living in NC has definitely helped me with the winter blues...along with all the coffee I drink at the coffee stand. LOL!!

heather- I have Seasonal Affective Disorder and it hits me hard every year. Between the fatigue, depression, lack of motivation and the carb cravings, I feel like a true couch potato!
About 10 years ago, I bought a therapy light through FullSpectrumSolutions.com. Its a standing floor lamp and I keep it next to my computer so whenever I am at my desk I get a boost of light. It really makes a difference b/c I have broken the bulbs on occasion, and while I am waiting for a new one to be delivered, I can really tell how fast my mood can plummet.

Another month or so and we'll be getting nicer weather down here. I live for that!! When do you start noticing longer days/warmer weather by you?

I feel for all you who suffer with seasonal change. I live in a warm climate and it is usually sunny. It is hot and humid and sometimes the excessive heat bothers me but then I just go in the A/C.

Hopefully warm sunny days are coming your way soon.

well we have gorgeous sunshine and blue skies most of the winter, its just the cold. It should start getting warmer in late march, but then again you never know, it could blizzard all month. I use a heating pad on the floor for my feet, lol.

I don't know what's worse here, the weak sun or the cold. I think is the cold. It hurts. (My kids and I have Reynauds Syndrome and our feet and hands become painful when it is cold. Then they burn when they warm up.) And once you get cold, you can't warm up. Its easier to cool down in the summer than warm up in the winter, right?

I was feeling it last night. It was bitter cold yesterday and there is 8 inches of snow on the way (and least it has decreased from 1 foot.) There are several things at work that aren't bad, just not great. I don't like the class I'm taking; I'm ready to be done with the class I am teaching. And it's just weighing me down. I had an awful dream about Ben drowning. The kid that makes you get up and go look at them in their bed. And I just laid in bed for a couple of hours feeling awfully uncomfortable. Eventually, I got tired enough and fell back asleep. But I hope we hit spring soon. I'm ready to change my attitude.

Sara- I am looking forward to spring too- Just being to be outside and see little bits of green popping pout of the ground makes me happy!
I had a dream like that about Scott when he was a toddler. He was born with holes in his heart and in the dream he was dying from them. What is it, 14 years alter and I *still* can see him in my dream and it makes me cry. So glad that you were able to go check on him and see he was ok. Bet you hug him lots today.

Vicki- oh lucky you, a tanning bed!
I used to do that when I really needed a perk-up, but now between money and fear of cancer and wrinkles I wait until summer sun

I haven't tanned in a tanning bed since 1980 something so I figure I'm all right. My mental health is more important to me this year :)

I don't feel depressed, but I am happier when it's Spring. I really can enjoy the warm sun on my face and see the changes is our garden.
Days are getting longer here, but every now and then we still have a snowy day. This year it looks like the Winter is during longer.

:( I usually feel like if I can make it OK to March, I have the worst of it beat. But I justheard long rage foreacts that due to fronts and air currents and blah blah blah, March in my area is going to be much colder than normal.

I just want sun and warm air and to be able to run outside without bundling up and freezing.
