SmartPhone Cameras?

I heard a podcast the other day, in which 3 professional photographers admitted that for personal photographs, they use their phones for up to 90% of the pictures they take!!!!!!!!!!!! This shocked me. I would love to know how many Oscrappers choose their phone over their DSLR or P&S.

I get frustrated with the shutter lag. Anyone else? Is there a solution to this? Does that "con" improve with the newer/better phones?

I use my iPhone 5 for most of my photos. I have it defaulted to flash off, which speeds things sometimes. I always figure I can lighten in photoshop.

I learned a trick recently with the iPhone. The shutter releases when you removed your finger from the icon on the screen (if you use this versus the volume button). So for best focusing, put your finger on the button and hold it there, then release. It's also a smoother action than 'hitting' the button which can cause a defocus/blur.

I found a whole book in my library recently about iPhone photography, with articles from several prominent photographers. They all said it enabled more spontaneous photos

I have a smartish phone, not an iPhone but frankly it's photography skills are about the same as my 8 yr olds - slow, clunky, cumbersome, slow, you get the picture. The photos look amazing on the brightly backlit screen but the minute I upload them I can see how lacking in quality they are. I've found if I run them through Lightroom I can rescue some, but not many.

And guess what, I did a LO on this very topic!




So no, I am not a fan of using my phone - it can't even compete with my aforementioned 8 yr old's p&s camera.

My iPhone 4 does decently. But when I am really concerned about getting good photos...like our recent trip to Disney....I rely on my Canon. But for everyday photos...it's not bad!

I'm moving that direction. The convenience outweighs the shutter lag and resulting imperfect photos. I use my DSLR only when I'm heading to event these days or if it's handy!

I'm the same as Anna ... my HTL Smartphone is with me ALL the time & it's so easy to snap the everyday shots + I'm in LOVE with Instagram ... my "proper" camera comes out if it's a planned event (i.e. holidays, parties etc)

Yes I have an iphone and yes it takes decent photos in bright light and if I had young kids maybe I would use it more. As a mom with young kids I would love the ease and small size but I just dont see how they will replace the need for telephoto shots like photographing birds or sports action shots. I do know that I love small cameras and I am really leaning toward trying out the new Sony NEX cameras which have interchangable lens and very are very small.

LOVE Instagram! I have an iPhone 4 and LOVE being able to take photos. Not great quality...certainly not DSLR quality. But for catching spontaneous moments...totally in love with it. (The phone camera I had on my Blackberry certainly never compared.)

I've got iPhone4 and I use it all the time for taking photos and videos. I only use my DSLR when I'm on holiday or attending my boys' concerts. Frankly it's so much easier to whip the phone out and snap even though at times the quality isn't great but thankfully I can correct in Photoshop. The only time it isn't great is when there's moving images. It gets blurry!

In fact, most of the photos scrapped are taken by my camera phone. Luv playing with the photo apps too i.e Hipstamatic, Instagram etc.

I'm using the camera of my Samsung Galaxy SII a lot!
My husband has the Samsung Galaxy Note and we used photos of him full page in a 12" album. It looks great.

During vacations I'm always walking with my DSLR, but there are so many photo moments in the every day life and for those moments the camera in my phone is good enough.
The only thing I really miss is a good zoom possibility.

I have been taking all of my December Daily photos with my HTC Evo 4G. For some reason it has just been easier than lugging around my camera. I'm going for easy these days. ;D

Has anyone used any of the cute little lenses that slip on the iPhone? I saw some great macro shots using one. I was tempted to get one, but have a 4 now so if I upgrade to a 5 it might take a different lens...

yep, i'm with y'all - if it's an "event" it's with the big canon, if it's every day life, it's the iphone

I was tempted by those little lenses you can add to your phone, but looking at it closely, it didn't seem like they would work if you have any kind of cover on your phone, so I passed it up...if you have to start fumbling with covers and lenses, the moment may be lost.
