I need some book recommendations for my 14 year old daughter, please. We spent an hour at the library the other day and she refused to ask the librarian there, nor would she let me ask. She has a very specific taste in literature and hates reading books that would be considered academic.
her taste runs somewhat dark.
The last two books she liked were Thirteen Reasons Why and Before I Die. She also like Ms Peregrines Home and wants to read Perks of being a Wallflower.

Any other ideas of some authors she might like?

Thanks!

this may sound stupid, but has she read the Harry Potter books? they start out being a little bit "young," but they move through time and maturity in a wonderful way. i loved them. my grown kids loved them. they are miles better than the films and also tremendously moving, com[plex and funny, all at the same time.

Not stupid at all. This is the heartbreak of my life!! She doesn't like Harry Potter books!!!

We read them together when my guys were little, and then after book three, Scott and I read them on our own and she gave up. Now she says she can't read them b/c she knows who dies. I know who dies. All of them, and yet, I still can read them over and over and over... and well, you get it. LOL

Its very sad. :(
She also has no interest in The Hunger Games which Scott and I both read an loved. I *loved* them, Scott liked the first one and was ok with 2 and 3.

Maybe I should just be happy she wants to read, ya think? ;)
(that was self-deprecating in case it didn't come through in type.)

My 13 year old daughter red in the last few weeks Thirteen Reasons Why and Perks of being a Wallflower. And she red it in english :)

She loves to read books in english. At the moment she reads
looking for alaska.

She also hates Harry Potter, seems your daughters have the same taste in books.

What my daughter red was the hunger games .
And by the way my daughter doesn´t like specific "dark themed books", I think they are only interested in the stories.

my daughter had a lot of fun with these 2 books, which I never seen before:
Wreck this journal and finish this book

What about the series by Allyson Noel called "Shimmer"? It might seem a tad too young, but I think she might like the premise. I just saw one today that looked really interesting called Soulbound - It's got a kick butt protagonist. http://www.amazon.com/The-Legacy-Tr...UTF8&qid=1362249533&sr=8-3&keywords=soulbound Ironically, when I went to get the Amazon link for that one, there was another one by the same name which looked interesting too. A witch that is a seventh daughter of a seventh daughter. :)

I'll ask our middle school librarian for ideas too. I am woefully out of touch with YA Lit!!!

She could look through a couple of places though. SYNC YA Listening does a free contemporary YA book paired with a free classic book every week of the summer. Here is the list from last summer, which could help generate some new ideas: http://www.audiobooksync.com/sync-young-adult-titles/

Young Adult's Library Services Association puts out amazing awards lists and even has an app for helping teens and parents find books on their awards lists.

And here are their top three award lists:
http://www.ala.org/yalsa/alex-awards

And here are the award nominees for teen books for New Jersey:

Lastly - Here are the Young Adult nominees for our state awards this year. I haven't read any of them though! I can tell you she will not like Scat, that's almost more for my level of kids. LOL

always chatty at the O!!
What about the Lord of the Rings books?

Also...The Host by Stephanie Meyer is pretty good. (I know it's by the Twilight lady but it was pretty good nonetheless)

Yes!!!! Thank you all so much for the input. I know I complain about this a lot but there isn;t a good reads app on Windows phone (yet another reason to hate windows phones-- don't ever get one.). Anyway. I am going to try and put these into evernote so I can pull them up for the next time we head over to the library.

Clara- She loved watching LoTR as a kid (I know, bad mama)but I doubt she would get into the books. I couldn't get into them either. #1 problem with watching the movie first, the books become a fight in my head against what I have already seen.
And my Non-judgmental (HA!) DD wouldn't touch a book by S Meyers just b/c she wrote twilight.

I would say both! LOL

I didn't mind the first book because I figured she would get better. Ugh on the second and third. Fourth was ok because we finally had some strong characters. Glad I read them so I can say why I don't feel they belong in my library and I know what people are talking about, but not one of my favorites!

would that be geared towards the pregnancy stuff in Book 4 or the fact that Bella is a twit?

Had to look up twit in the dictionary ... YES!

Bella teaches that as long as you behave (don't smell of blood), dangerous men won't kill you. If you just love them enough you're safe. BOVINE POO!

Having said that - I've read the books once, listen to the audiobooks twice and seen all movies except the last twice. But I'm old enough to know that dangerous men are ... dangerous!

I'm so happy I have a teenage boy and not a girl. He, on the other hand, loves My Little Pony ... maybe I should worry about that

Eva!!!! OMG I just :spit:

Sara, I totally agree with your analysis of the series. I read them all and enjoyed 1 and 4. I would put them in the "Beach Read" category. But Bella makes me crazy as a character. And Kristen Stewart-- same.

I think one of the reasons that I adore Gone with the Wind so much is that Scarlett is kick-ass, esp in light of the time period she "lived" in as well as had been written in. Very progressive character for the 1930's.

I actually think Twilight Saga is one of the few exceptions to the rule that the book always is better than the movie. Much because Bella isn't as stupid in the movies as in the book.

What about Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare? Last Book 3 is due out this month. Good strong characters in that!

Perks is a pretty mature book, I read it at her age and probably should of waited another year or two.

the Hitchhikers Guide books are dark but they are goofy... I loved them.

I had like three or four recommendations and they just drifted out of my head as I read everyone else's :( Grr, I'll try and remember them and come back later!

I cannot believe it ... I forgot about our FANTASTIC Swedish young adult books:

The Circle and Fire by Sara Bergmark Elfgren and Mats Strandberg. (I thought Fire was released in English already, but that might be an UK edition?)

I'm just copying the text from amazon for The Circle, and you won't have to go there unless you want to:

"On a night after the apparent suicide of high school student Elias Malmgren, a blood-red moon fills the night sky. Minoo wakes up outside her house, still in her pajamas, and is drawn by an invisible force to an abandoned theme park on the outskirts of town. Soon five of her classmates--Vanessa, Linnea, Anna-Karin, Rebecka and Ida--arrive, compelled the same force. A mystical being takes over Ida's body and tells them they are fated to fight an ancient evil that is hunting them. The park is a safe haven; the school, a place of danger. The six are wildly different and definitely not friends…but they are the Chosen Ones.

As the weeks pass, each girl discovers she has a unique magical ability. They begin exploring their powers, but they are not all firmly committed to their mission--to discover the truth about Elias's death. Then a horrible tragedy strikes within the circle. Newly determined to fight the evil forces, they begin to learn magic from The Book of Patterns, an ancient work with a will of its own that reveals different things to different witches.

In this gripping first installment of the Engelsfors Trilogy, a parallel world emerges in which teenage dreams, insanely annoying parents, bullying, revenge, and love collide with flirtation, dangerous forces, and ancient magic. An international sensation with rights sold in 24 countries, The Circle is razor-sharp and remarkable from start to finish."

I'm waiting like crazy for part 3 to be released. I know they are writing on it right now, cuz I'm "stalking" the authors on Instagram LOL

Chris we ordered some books yesterday from the wishlist of my daughter :)
She told me"mum I don´t have any problems, I´m lucky, so no worry if you read the stories of these books"

Wintergirls
Hold still
Suicide notes

I think your daughter would like them too ;-)

That is too funny- I took Cait to the library the other day and she took out a book on cutting.....
eep!
I guess as long as our kids are ok, its a good way for them to realized cutting/suicide/etc is NOT the way to go.

I'll see if those books might interest her too. thanks for sharing!

a book on cutting.....

She had also a book called "cut" on her list , but we only found it in german and she wants to read it in english.

You are right I think this is only interested for them. my daughter has some girls in her class which cut themselves and to be honest I´m also interested in such things.
I like watching TV series about such things:tape:

I think that is the one she got.

Scott (my son) had issues with cutting. It is pretty scary to witness, that is for sure. I have an eating disorder (in control ATM!! :D) so I can relate to it all very much.
I think it is good that the kids have an outlet in reading on these topics. All I remember reading when I was a kid was about how great life was.
