Ok girls. Selena and others....

Please explain this to me. I am no fashionista. And I'm sure there are plenty of outfits at awards ceremonies and what not here in the U.S. that make others cringe too. But what is the deal with hats over there?

I don't discount the creativity of some of these. And some are pretty neat. But there are some that just make me shake my head!! Why are hats the tradition they are over there? I'm curious the history that drives this trend. :) And do you know anyone who wears bizarre stuff like this? :)

By the way, the link is clickable in case you want to see more of the "Craziest hats at the Royal Ascot".

Bwhahahahahahahah!

And for all you "Go Dogs Go" fans out there.......

"Do you like my hat?"
"I do NOT like your hat."
"Goodbye."
"Goodbye."

THAT is totally bonkers - imagine if a big wind got up. Hahahahaha. Ascot is a bit of a one off - it's filled with girls-who-would-never-normally-wear-a-hat-showing-off. It's got absolutely nothing to do with horse racing, which is what Ascot is meant to be about. It's about wearing unsuitable clothes, getting your photo taken and appearing in Hello or Tatler.

We do have a tradition of wearing hats on formal occasions, like weddings, but it does tend to be for to women of a certain age or status - like the mother of the bride - and I've always maintained that I am too young to do this. Of course, at the age I am now, I actually find myself going to more funerals than weddings!

My cousin is an award winning milliner and whilst I marvel at her creations I wouldn't want to actually wear on (sorry, Tatiana, but I wouldn't!). I do own a hat, though, which I am having to wear everyday at the moment - but it's a rain hat for my dog walks - not quite haute couture.

Yup ... Royal Ascot is all about the fashion & hats ... and if it looks "weird", it makes the headlines and that's what the wearer & designers are aiming for!

Unlike my dear friend Selena, I actually LOVE to wear a hat ... unfortunately, I don't often have a reason to wear one these days ... weddings, christenings, day at the races etc are few are far between in my life!

This is my favourite ... I bought it for a friend's wedding 12yrs ago ... it's my "go to" hat and still looks as good today, as when I first wore it ...

Sara, excellent question. After seeing all of the "odd" hats at the Royal Wedding last year I wondered about that myself.
Now *that* hat... wow...its a doozy!:yo:

Selena- Loved your explanation. Good to know that your don't run about town with something growing out of your head :pound:

Suesy Bluesy- you look MAH-Va-lous! Seriously beautiful and British!!!

Sue I LOVE your hat! I could get that!

I suppose at the Kentucky Derby and other high class events, women wear hats here too. I am not high class, so I wouldn't know about such things!! LOL

So I'm gathering that Ascot is a bit like the MTV Movie Awards or the Grammy's or something. Someone shows up in a meat dress and there goes the press.

So, that's good to know the rest of you don't wear a fake meal sliding off your heads (like the one hat)!

I would love to wear hats- however- except for my fat layer- I am smaller than normal in my structure- I put on a typical womens hat and if I turn my head quick, the hat stays and my head turns- when I bought my western hat, I had to shop the kids dept and get a liner!
