all this finger crossing helped, thank goodness Tom has his own pc so I could look up what to do next. Even my repair disk wouldn't work.
I was ready to chuck it

the only thing I seem to have lost is my Oscraps bookmarks map, I'll just have to make a new one

A couple of suggestions for future reference. If you are a Mac user (Apple), I would seriously suggest you purchase Time Machine and have it running at all times. It performs continuous back-ups of your critical data (or your entire hard drive image) at intervals you configure. If you ever have a problem with your device, you can restore based on the last backup image.

I have a wireless version which I find very effective.

As for bookmarks, there is an excellent FREE open source tool called Xmarks (I believe they were just acquired so it may have changed names). it will synchronize all of your bookmarks across every device you own (Mac, PC, iPhone, iPad) and updates/synchronizes every time that you make a change on one machine (i.e. add bookmark, delete, edit...etc.).

You can find the product here: www.xmarks.com

Cheers,
M.

Yay that's it's working again and EXCELLENT advice IslandHopper! I'm going to check out that bookmarks thing as all of my machines have different bookmarks and that can be frustrating when looking for something I KNOW I have lol

thanks for your advice M. mmm how do I convince my other half that I need a Mac? I've only got a pc, my external hard drive is updated daily with all the changes and it's from there that I managed to restore the laptop.
That Xmark thing osunds like a good one to own but helas, I only have the laptop, no Ipad/Iphone/ I anything.
He himself won't allow me to put more of my things on his computer so there would be nothing to synchronise

he even called one of my major files on his computer Ellen's digibit AVALANCHE
But I'll keep it in mind.
