How do you watch the news, or not at all?

How do you watch the news, or not at all?
I get really depressed sometimes, always bad news.
Natural disasters that are taking place all over the world this summer, corona that still holds us in its grip. Animal executioners, or people who buy animals and then just leave them along the road. Do people have no morals anymore?
Tonight I was really scared of how the world is evolving. Do you also experience this or is it just me?

I usually read 3 news paper sites (2 (inter)national & 1 local) + watch 1 or 2 news show on TV every day. It's "serious" news, I avoid the more "tabloid/click bait" news sources, since I find that they focus more on tragedy & gossip. I stick to public service & more serious news papers. But that's just my taste.

I want to get the news daily, cuz I think it's important to keep up with what happens. My take on all the sh*t that happens in the world, is that I cannot internalize it all. I can't change the world, but I can keep me informed and not shut my eyes to what happens. Also, I do what I can. An example: I cannot go to Afghanistan and give the people there peace, but I can recycle my plastics to do my part for the environment. And so on. I've decided that as long as I do as much as I possibly can, I've done my bit. The rest have to fall on other people's karma.

Finally ... you all know by now how much I hate social media ... What helped me immensely to cope with the world, that I don't have social media - when EVERYONE you've known since kindergarten starts sharing news on Faecesbook, and EVERYONE has different opinions & share different articles ... you basically drown in bad news.

“If a problem is fixable, if a situation is such that you can do something about it, then there is no need to worry. If it's not fixable, then there is no help in worrying. There is no benefit in worrying whatsoever."

The only news I "watch" is the local news at 5 am. Otherwise, I mostly get my news from the Washington Post, NY Times or CNN online. I also listen to POTUS on SiriusXM.

I have always been a worrier and sometimes it is difficult to let go of situations or events. What you write eva is so true, only I have yet to apply it in reality, and the quote from the daila lama is so true too ! Thank you for sharing !

Yup! good quote, tanteva. My husband suffers from anxiety. I have to pound it into his head that he cannot control everything. Deal with what you can control and let the rest go.

I had to quit watching the news because I was getting too depressed. I figure if anything major happens, it will be all over my facebook feed and so far, that's been accurate. And, yes, that's all still just bad after bad, contradiction after contradiction.o_O

I certainly don't watch the news every day, just because it makes me so depressed, and then I think I'll hear about it when something important happens

Stop watching years a decade ago after living with a news junkie (my mom) for a while.

I quit watching the news YEARS ago! It's too biased! And, I figure if something is really happening that I need to know about, my pastor will let me know, lol! But, really, I have IBS and stress and anxiety only makes it worse, so I avoid anything that might cause stress or anxiety to creep in!

I don't watch any news on TV, the way that just about every station plays the images over and over and over is not good for my (or anyone's) mental health. I remember how on Sept 11, I was glued to the TV and for days and weeks after. I still see the towers fall in my head, honestly who doesn't?
I try to get my news online from reputable sources. I use a Firefox Add On- Media Bias Fact Check- that gives every site a rating of how it leans and how factual it is. I also found this website: https://ground.news/ which helps to read different aspects of the same story.

From an emotional perspective, it is really hard for me to read the news, to stay informed. It feels like there are so many enormous problems, locally and globally, and I don't know how we are supposed to fix it all. It is impossible to not get overwhelmed. OTOH, I feel the need to stay alert and aware of what is happening so I can make the best decisions I can for myself, my family, and my community. It is a really fine line and one that changes a lot
