Do you have a food that evokes memories?

For me, there are so many foods that evoke warm memories from my past. For example, my grandma's potato salad. We would go there on Sunday for dinner and we always had either mashed potatoes or potato salad. No one else made potato salad the way that my grandma did. I have her recipe and every once in awhile, it tastes just like hers. But not always.

What about you?

So many foods to think about and 99.99999% are connected to family and holidays

Grandma's dumplings - if I ever eat some that taste remotely like hers. Also, my other grandma made the world's best rice pudding. I'm always on the search for rice pudding like Granny's. There used to be this little hotel/restaurant in Michigan that had rice pudding that came very close.

Reminds me of my grandma's coffee. She grinded (ground?) the coffee beans by hand and had this ancient coffee pot (probably not properly cleaned for decades) and cooked it on the stove top. Best coffee ever!

Yes, I have such memories too -
With us there has always been traditionally on 24.12. In the evening a certain potato salad with sausages = Saxon potato salad with potatoes with meat salad, cucumber and apple.
I love it and make it every Christmas, but my grandma liked it best

INGREDIENTS FOR 4 PORTIONS OF SAXONY POTATO SALAD:
500 grams of potatoes
200 g meat salad
5 gherkins
1 onion
1 apple
1 tsp mustard
1 tsp salt
Natural yoghurt or salad cream / mayonnaise (a little, to taste)
Gherkin water (some from the gherkins)
some capers, if you like

For the potato salad, first boil the potatoes as jacket potatoes. Then peel them and let them cool down.
Then you cut them into small cubes and put them in a bowl. Also dice the gherkins, onion and apple into small pieces and add them to the potatoes.
Now add 1-2 tablespoons of the cucumber water, the meat salad, the mustard and the salt and mix everything carefully to form a fine meat salad. If the consistency still seems too dry to you, add some yoghurt or mayonnaise.
Finally, season your Saxon potato salad with salt and possibly pepper and chill it again to steep.
make sure to soak well - I always make the salad 1 day before

The potato salad will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days.

I have a few other foods that take me back. My Auntie Evelyn's strawberry jello salad. She hosted our Thanksgiving dinners from the time that I was about 10 years old and every single time, she had her strawberry jello salad. It is a strawberry jello with strawberries and topped with a mixture of whipped cream, cream cheese and marshmallows. I would start looking forward to that in October... When Auntie Evelyn stopped hosting, I took over and that salad has been at every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner for over 40 years. And although my kids don't know Auntie Evelyn, they sure know Auntie Evelyn's jello salad!

Mom's apple pie. Nobody could beat it. Fresh apples from our 5 apple trees a fantastic flaky crust and just the right amount of cinnamon. Next her sticky cinnamon buns, and fresh baked bread. The aroma from her kitchen on baking day made my knees week in anticipation.
We didn't have much money but mom could stretch a dollar like Gumby and make a meal out of nothing.

Hahahaha, I showed this to my Hubby.. because I tell stories and he says 'oh another food memory'. Food is the fabric of my life. Indian food always reminds me of this little hole-in-the-wall place in London, that was my Dad's fave spot. I can clearly remember the first time he took me there, the food is the best.. And I have taken all the important people in my life there. @mywisecrafts and her hubby recently took me to a place that reminded me of this place. The food was amazing.
