Clara,
actually Iceland is called so, because of Erik the Red, who , fleeing from Norway jail ,found the island. He also found the Greenland. Greenland has a way larger Ice cover than Iceland, but I believe he saw first the south east of Iceland which is covered by the lager European glacier
Vatnajókull, while what he saw first of Greenland were the southern part ... which is the one "not icy".
so he called them in a way he could differentiated them...
but he got it all wrong, Iceland is greener than Greenland, so the naming is not appropriated, ad furthermore he should have call this land...WINDland!!!
gosh wind is one of the worst thing here...
But that is not what I want you to remember about this place...
it is the most wonderful place I ever seen, landscape are changing within 50km. you can be on a black sanded beach, and in huge glacier 1 hour later.
I used to call this country "N-iceland"

Each year we travel around the country, and we are (after almost 11 years) still seeing amazing things, places.
honestly the only thing which bother me here, is to live in 3 languages
french at home - english at work - icelandic with kiddos friends/homework etc etc
beside that,it is the place I want to live, where I want to rise my kids, everything is perfect
(beside wind and Icelandic langages)
I will try to bring some photos later ;-)
