Is a sheet cake tacky?

We are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary next month. We didn’t realize how much wedding cakes cost, so hubby nixed a regular wedding cake when we saw the prices, and wants to get a sheet cake. Am I disappointed? Yes. Is this the end of the world? No. I just feel like a sheet cake is not very fancy.

What do you think? We will be having a small get together (about 30 people) after or vow renewal at church.

for me, a simple sheet cake is not so suitable.
or you take a selection of sheet cakes and tarts - so mixed -

But I would say a nice cake for you as a silver wedding couple is more appropriate - there are so many possibilities

I'm sure you've had to tighten up your budget now. Personally, I don't think a sheet cake is tacky. It would be nice to have a "replica" of your first cake, but I've seen some very pretty sheet cakes. We've had some really nice ones made and 30 people is quite a good amount of people. If you want to cut corners, that might be a good way to do it. Cakes are ridiculously expensive! Good luck with your decisions.

We had large 2 sheets cakes for my parents 50th wedding anniversary celebration (100+ guests). I don't think they were tacky at all. They had lovely flowers decorations on the corners and "Happy 50th Anniversary" across the center. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I votes depends... because it all depends... there are sheet cakes and sheet cakes... and then there is presentation which, as the saying goes, is 70% of your success. If you have the simplest of sheet cakes because you can't affort more on your 25th wedding anniversary and are going to act all salty about out - then it's definitely sad. But if you choose to have a somewhat sophisticated sheet cake as a symbol of 'for better and for worse' and in the spirit of 'the simple things are the best and we can spend this money on something we will both enjoy more than a fancy cake our guests will admire but not really eat' - then it's definitey worth it. There is always a way to spin the narrative - 'it's not what but with whom' theme... you can even bake the thing yourself - the staple cake you make on a boring Tuesday that spells HOME for both of you and and kind of 'welcome to our home' thing... ... and this way the simplest of cakes can become the symbol of love and commitment and appreciation for the all the everdays spent together...

I just never thought past what I have always seen. Any vow renewal I’ve been to had an actual wedding cake, not a sheet cake. I’ve been looking through some other bakeries and seen some pretty decorations.

Yes, with having to buy a new Diamond, our budget changed a lot. I just never thought of a sheet cake because any renewal I’ve been to had the whole she bang!

I’ve Already started looking and there are many choices out there. The decision is made - I just wanted to see if my perception was off - and it is.

I think that your vow renewal are the most important thing, not the kind of cake, LoL!

Well yes, obviously! I would just do the renewal and be happy if that’s all we did. Hubby wanted to have the party and make. Big deal of it, so my mind changed to a “bigger” deal. I just needed to hive mind the cake because I have never seen a sheet cake at a vow renewal.

Honestly I’m not all “salty” about it. I have spent 2 weeks talking to vendors, getting prices, and scouring the internet for a cake, so yeah, after all that it would make anyone stop short and at least be a little disappointed that all that work was for naught.

Believe me when I tell you I am grateful for the anniversary and the celebration - more than anyone can ever know. 5 years ago we weren’t sure if we’d make 20. We almost lost it all.

This celebration is more than just a number to me. It’s a celebration of a renewed and saved marriage.

Well, this pretty much says it all, Susie. Here's to your next 25 years together!! Your vow renewal will be absolutely wonderful, no matter what you do - you've certainly earned this celebration!#kiss3#kiss3

One idea would be to go with several smaller cakes where you have one on display to cut that is beautifully decorated and then several sliced up in the kitchen that are ready to serve but don't have to look as good. You could even use sheet cakes with similar frosting to the main event and feed everyone for less.

Like this is your main cake.

Then you get a large chocolate sheet cake with buttercream icing, slice it up in the kitchen and serve. Everyone gets cake and y'all can take home leftovers of the best cake. (double bonus)

I've seen lots of these gorgeous, smaller cakes for a reasonable price and then adding sheet cakes with the same type of cake can really cut down on costs.

Publix is awesome. It’d be hard to move somewhere without one. And it’s not just the bakery. Their subs are amazing. Employees are friendly. I love Publix.

I am not sure if they have a BJs with a bakery near you, but they make a 2 tiered cake. It's small, would only feed 45-50 I think. But you could use that since there isn't a Publix near you perhaps?

25 years of marriage is something not everyone can achieve in this era of 'disposable everything'... and anyone who's been married knows what it takes to make a relationship work.... you definitely deserve this celebration and are entitled to feel just a little smug about the number too! It is a GREAT number, by the way. Just like you are entitled to feel disappointed that the cake you wanted/envisioned might not happen. What I meant is, while you two will know the real reason behind the sheet cake should you choose to go with that option, nobody else needs to, there is always a way to spin it to your advantage, because when it comes to celebrating marriages, there is no right or wrong, there are just other people's opinions. Whether or not it will be considered tacky will depend on you two, not on the cake.

I hope you have an awesome ceremony and get lots of photos taken and I can't wait to see at least some of those scrapped.

We feel exactly the same way! I totally don’t want to be a Bridezilla, so I was just self checking. :)

I found a gorgeous cake, and a baker who will do a half sheet 1/2 chocolate 1/2 vanilla cake with cream filling for 30.00. Can’t beat that!!!!

Now to figure out the food. The renewal is at noon so people will be hungry for lunch!

I will definitely show ya'll the end product and I'm sure I'll have a few scrap pages about it!! I hope ya'll aren't sick of me going on about all this. I really don't have many IRL friends to talk things through. Most of the people I met here when we moved here have actually moved away. :(
