The Miami Blue is a small butterfly that is native to the coastal areas of Southern Florida. Once very common throughtout its range, it has become criticall endangered and may be the rarest insect in the US> The range of the Miami Blue was reduced in the second half of the 20th century due to urban development. Hurricane Andrew appeared to wipe out the remaing species in 1992. Searches were made; 4 were found. The adult Miami Blue are short lived; females may live 5 days, males about 2 days. There is a captive breeding program at the Florida Museum of Natural History that has increased their numbers somewhat.
