Oscraps

How do you start a layout?

Hi!
I usually start by throwing a paper onto a page, then go through the kit and anything I like at all gets thrown on the page. Then I go from there. Sometimes the page is built entirely photo-less, then I find the photo to go with it last. That's weird, I know.

Personal scrapping, I do chronological photos. So I start with all my photos of an event, like a birthday. I then see how many I have and then search the folders for things that make that event, like balloons, cake, streamers, etc. Then I find any and all photo masks that make me smile. Sometimes I will do a template if I have 4-6 photos or 30 photos. I have several templates that fit those two amounts. Then I hunt for the background papers. I tend to use 3-10 kits per personal layout. For challenges, its a different system yet not too different. I first have to hunt down the photo that fits the challenge. Then I look for the background paper and then add elements. I also try to keep challenge LO to one kit but I am not always successful.

Yes, that is weird :floorlaugh: To create an entire layout then add a photo. I wouldn't be able to do that.

Most of my LOs are done to show off a designer's kit/bundle. I usually begin by looking for photos with the the right colors/theme. I put a few photos on a blank background then add several papers behind them. Then click all but 1 photo off and click through the papers. Do this for each photo. Usually a photo jumps out. Hide the papers and add elements to build cluster/s around or near photo/s... add title/word strips then turn papers on/off to find the best one.

When I'm album scrapping, I start with my photos and maybe a template. Then I look for a kit and add papers to coordinate with my photos. Then I throw a bunch of elements on there and add some journaling.

When I'm scrapping to relax and be creative only, I follow the same method as @mimes1. So, you're not the only weird one! lol

painstakingly... lol... by scrolling through my photos, then scrolling through my template collection... abandoning the whole thing, then going through my kits.. I am the queen of indecision when it comes to starting a layout...
Me too! Since I'm usually doing a CT layout, I have a specific kit to use. But photos and templates are hard to pick sometimes.

I seldom do ANYthing the same way and seldom remember HOW I did something. Sometimes it's the photo or photos that inspire me, sometimes a kit triggers a memory , sometimes it's a challenge . I follow the chickens and squirrels -

It all depends of how I am feeling at the time! lol!

There is the quick, decisive me that realizes very late in the day that I was supposed to have done a layout for someone so I just shut all distractions down and work frantically to get it done. :giggle4:

Then the other me that spots the collection and instantly thinks of the photo I want to use with it, or vice versa, photo first then kit.

But then is another one of me :whistle2: that just strolls through my photos looking at them all, or though my stash, trying to find some mojo........... after the hour (or two) mark :waiting 2: I realise nothing is going to happen so I go and do some housework!! :lol23:

don't we all operate like this???

I have friends who always start the same way, but that's not me. Sometimes I start with a color story. Sometimes I start with the photos. Sometimes I start with a kit. Sometimes I start with a template or structure for a layout. Sometimes I suck a lot of things into Photoshop and stir them to see what I get. It's amazing to me sometimes that I ever finish a layout at all! I think my "style" is a lot like Jeanne's! Oooh look! Shiny! :giggle4: :giggle4: :giggle4:

Count me in the weird club, Amy! I do this, too! :floorlaugh:

Tracy, I am in awe! I don't know if I'd ever have enough photos to fill 30 frames in a template. When I was growing up, my grandma gave me my first camera - a brownie with these horrible blue flash bulbs that would pop out as molten glass as soon as you took the photo. And I loved that camera. And taking photos. And I still do. But my parents would never buy me film. So I guess I'm in the habit still - even in this digital age - of taking very few photos. You rock! :heartpumppink:

I put a few photos on a blank background then add several papers behind them. Then click all but 1 photo off and click through the papers.
I do this, too, Kay! I test multiple background papers to see what I like best. Glad I'm not the only one! :giggle4:

How cool, Jenn! I love that sometimes you're just playing! :dancing6:

I can totally relate to feeling indecision as some of you mentioned. For me, sometimes I have to let my brain "percolate" on things a bit. I feed it all the photos, templates, and kits, and then have to go do something else. And 3 days later, POP! An idea is formed! I'm on a slow curve! :floorlaugh:

Oh my goodness, so there is a process?! :floorlaugh:
I have no idea what mine is. I think it's always different and this is what I love about it. I consider my scrapbooking to be my creative outlet, I want to create art (maybe that's why I use less and less photos in my layouts), tell a story, convey a concept or emotion. Sometimes I just want to play with very cool kits that speak to me in either aesthetic or intellectual/emotional way (or both).
So, I guess I could say, 80% of the time the process starts inside of me and in about 20% of cases is triggered by what's available in the store goofysmile1
As far as the actual technic goes, I just experiment and play around with different elements and different tools of my PSE. It's a constant learning and discovery process :rotfl:

I often do the same as you goofysmile1
