when creating a page

Do you follow any rules of design or coordinating colours, etc? I wing it, every. single. time. Sure I have my own wacky set of rules like no text under elements, no floaty elements and flowers give me the hives, but no "design" rules.

hahahaha!! You know it-- I rarely know what a page is going to look like when I start it. And the times I *do* have an idea, I fight with my head and software non-stop and it *still* comes out different (and I usually hate it too! LOL)
 
I usually just go where the kit leads me. But somethings I try to keep in mind:
- no journaling hidden under elements
- balance is important
- love white space
- odd numbers of elements
- triangular shape
- subtle shadows

One "secret trick" I always use is: when I feel I'm done with the layout - every element is ok, I'm satisfied with all the shadows and so on - I open 4-5 papers from the kit and try them out. Often I find that the layout will look better with another paper for background.
 
Oh I love that color combo!!!!

Another question-do you scrap within a kit? I rarely do unless specified by the designer. I have to mix it up with other stuff.
 
I love the flowers and hives comment Heather! Sometimes I start with a product I really love and go from there and sometimes I have a photo I just have to scrap. But beyond that and some of the basic design principles like using odd numbers of items, I usually wing it. And my layouts never, ever end up the way I envisioned them when I started!

I always start with flowers... (kidding, Heather). I wing it. I do look
at a color wheel sometimes, but usually end up ignoring it. I am not over-fond of working within a kit, and really like to mix it up. I always enjoy "Heather questions," making me think about the process or the art of scrapbooking.
 
no specific scheme ... I just wing it. I tend to bend my own rules from time to time, so even those don't mean that much LOL

This took me a few years back with a terrible ADSR challenge requiring tons of stuff from tons of designers. I has an excel spreasheat open along with psp with columns like "numer of" "type of element" "kit" "designer" to track the credits ;)

I usually stay within one main kit, but if I'm looking for something specific that's not in there, I'll put my hard hat and headlamp on and go dig it up from my stash ;)
 
My pages are usually created based on the kit....then I have to go find a photo for what I just made...my photo is usually about the last thing to go in. On occasion though, I do start with the photo....and then I have to go find a kit to fit the photo....Yeah...that's not my favorite way to do it!! There are less photos to choose from than kits..HAHA!!!

I used to try to stick to the "rules" but not anymore.....I do some whacky stuff to achieve some things.... I could never write a tut on anything, because I almost never remember how I got there!! HAHA!!

Same here. photo is, in most of the cases, the last thing I think about...(except for journaling) I'm just a "i-wanna-scrap-with-that-kit" kind of scrapper rather than a "i-have-to-scrap-that-picture" scrapper.

And I wing it, 99% of the time except for when art journaling. My art journal pages are based on lyrics and most of the time when listening to a song I get an certain image in my head of how I want to depict the lyrics. And that's the way my art journal page will look like.
 
I'm a winger too and change my mind several times along the way so keeping track of what i used is a major issue.
The last thing I get is a photo to match what I've done.
I buy a kit because i like and never with a special photo in mind. Unless it's for a special occasion album. Then I will buy a kit to go with the photos in colours the recipient likes
