Journaling – What’s your motivation?

SaraTips & Techniques

Does anyone else get a picture in their head of a struggling actor when they read the title of this post? “What’s my motivation?” I have been hearing a lot about motivation in the leadership class that I’m taking.  The definition of motivation that we are working with is:  The desire to do something based on the action’s ability to meet a desire or need.  I started thinking about motivation in a lot of aspects of my life and I thought about how it can really apply to our scrapbooking and our journaling.  In order to really walk away with a layout we are happy with, we have to understand what our motivation is for it.  Is it to show off an amazing picture that we took?  Is it to showcase a stunning kit from a favorite designer?  That need or desire drives what we choose to do with our layout.  The same can be said for journaling.

If we want to develop a strong journaling block, we need to figure out what our motivation is for writing it.  If my desire is to tell a funny story, my journaling will reflect that in my word choice, design, placement, and even font.  If it is my need to pass on an important family story, my journaling will need to have details that make the story rich and words that reflect heritage.  Sometimes I find myself struggling with what to add to a page in terms of the details.  I occasionally take the quick way and simply add the date and maybe a short phrase to it.  While this is perfect on some layouts, others could probably use more.  Determining what my motivation is for scrapping what I am scrapping could help solve some of the writer’s block that I run into.    Choosing my motivation can lead to choosing words that represent that motivation which can lead to sentences that reflect it until I end up with a journaling block that really gets to the heart of my page.

Consider your motivation on the next pages you scrap and see how it drives your journaling!

  • Such excellent thoughts! I think I do this, but not sure I always think about it, but my motivation is that my grandchildren (which I do not have yet :-)) will be able to read something about my life, my trips, etc. For trips, I am also motivated to remember the details.

  • That’s one good point. Now I know how to compose and create ideas for my journaling.
