Oscraps

Storage & Organization

I used to store everything by designers name.
But last week I was searching for an alpha. And I just didn't know where to find it!
So I thought it would be better if I put the Alphas together as wel.

I'll come back to this thread. I can use some good ideas as well (as soon as I have a now ehd)

I have things in folder by Designer and then have a folder for Collabs and such. I just search for what I'm looking for...like "alpha", but that's not ideal. I'd love to be able to use a program like Bridge and tag or keyword things, but our home server is a PC and my laptop is a Mac. They don't play well together and my keywords don't stay. That's why I love it when designers are specific with their element names. My search results are better.

I heard a lot about ACDSee a while ago. I don't know if that's still a viable product. :-)

I posted an almost identical question over in the help section back in August, lots of responses over there if you want to check it out :)

I back up everything on to both of my EHDs, but my primary 1TB EHD is portable... it usually stays attached to my laptop.

I organize by Shop, then by designer, because it's easier for me when doing challenges at shops where I have to use products from their shop. I use Bridge to tag things, when I actually remember to! When I make my LOs, I usually always stick to the same kit and don't mix... actually I never mix, so I'm not too concerned with being able to search for certain things.
I do try to put everything from one kit in one folder, instead of the folders they come broken up in, just because it's easier to go through when I'm using it. On mac, when you have something selected in Finder, you can press on the space bar to get a bigger preview... so I just go up and down the list in finder previewing when picking out stuff to make a LO with. So, it's just easier to have everything in the same folder so I can do that.

Ha! I do mine by Shop first too, but since 95% of what I own is from the O...I sorta forgot that part! And Meg - I also change my thumbnail size so that I don't have to do the spacebar thing. :-)

I organize just like Meg...

I have a store folder, then designer folder....everything is on my EHD...and I have shortcuts to each store on my desktop. I don't do a lot of mixing and matching either....and if I am looking for a particular element...I almost always remember what designer has that element and then may have to search a bit through kits to find it..but not too hard to find for me. And I always put everything from a kit into one folder and toss out the extras...keeping only the preview, except alphas...I keep them in their own folder and put it in the kit folder.

i use ACDSee and a portable EHD.

i have one folder To be tagged that all of the new stuff gets downloaded into. After I tag it, it gets moved to its "home folder."
I have a folder for each of the CT's I am on. Then I have a main Oscraps Folder and a sub-folder for each designer.
As oscraps Designers retire, I put their folder in a separate folder called Old Oscraps Designers. I know , I am so darn original.

Since 99.9% of my stuff is oscraps/ct related, I do have basic folders for Kits, and a few by theme, like Holiday etc. I have folders for templates, elements, papers etc. Then I also have a folder for fonts, actions and styles that i can load into PS when I need them.

i use carbonite as my backup, but it doesn't back up ehds. Gary has a 2T hard drive so i have a folder on that that I back up my scrap stuff onto.

I use ACDSee and a portable hard drive, too. My folder structure is by product type (kits, elements, alphas, word art, etc) and then within each folder it has the product folder named as "Designer_Product" so they sort alphabetically. Although I have everything tagged in ACDSee so I don't depend on the folder structure too much.

I did pull CT items out into their own parent folder. And I also have a "favorites" folder that holds a lot of things that I used frequently (stitches, staples, etc)
