OKay...I got my insurance money and I am trying to decide what is my money's worth. Is getting the 55-200 lens worth the money? What does it do for me compared to the 18-50? Does anyone know? Thanks guys.

18-50 - gives you a little macro and portrait - snapshot capability. **I use this one most**

55-200 - (Mine is 75-300) I use this for mostly outdoor events like sports where I need to get close and want tight cropped action shots but physically I cannot be on the field with my small lens :) For getting close to animals etc...without being noticed :) (...or eaten *LOL*) Other then that - it is not really good for snapshot type photos. Also if it's not an image stabilize lens you have to consider camera shake as well.

I would just consider what type of photos you like and go with that lens :) If you have a best buy near you or any place that sells cameras go in and check out how the way the lenses zoom. Get a feel for them first :) I always find an on-hand trial never fails me :)

Congrats on finally getting the money!! I am glad they finally came through! Have fun picking the lens out!! Can't wait to see what you decide! So exciting!
 
Cool. thanks kat. i'll do that. i just can't decide whether to spend the money to get both or not and don't know enough about it to decide. i'll go check them out tomorrow.
 
I agree with Kat - they do different things.

My 50mm prime lens lives on my camera permanently, so that I can grab it when the kids do something awesome round the house.

When I'm out with the kids in say the park, I'd take my 70-200 - it's a bit OTT but it allows the close up shots without being so close by, and as Kat says, great for sports or events where you're kind of on the sidelines miles away.

If it were me and I could only get one lens now, I'd go for the 18-50, BUT as this is insurance money - perhaps you should buy the most expensive one and hope that Santa might be listening and consider the cheaper one for Christmas/a birthday.
 
Well, Here is the deal...I can spend about $500 and get one lens...the 18-55 or about $600 and get both. So, I'm trying to decide if I should just get the 18-55 or both. I just didn't know if it would be worth it to spend a little bit more to get both lenses.
 
I ended up getting a tamron 70mm-300mm for just a tad more instead of the 55-200. I'm pretty excited and can't wait!!

Me either!! Stupid postal service!!! Why does it take so long when you want ti here yesterday??? Come on already. Ugh!! 2 weeks takes FOREVER!!
 
my 55-200 lives on my camera permantly. lol. but 90% of my photos are taken outside. i do use the 18-55, but it's rare. i only use it for like kids opening christmas presents or something, if that. a lot of times (just so i can get a good close-up of their face) i just back way up for that and still use the 55-200. hahahaha. i just love that lens.

hubby did just order me a macro lens... i can't WAIT to get it!!! eeee. :)

On one of my cameras my 60mm macro lives there most of the time. It is great for its given job, (macro), but amazing for portraits too. My other camera has a 24-70mm lens on it most of the time, (it is a newer lens and I'm still deciding how I like it. I guess I just love my 60 more).

Are you talking Canon here Elisa? We have a 24-70mm which ought to be our best ever lens - given it's price! But sadly, something is awry with it, and of course it's out of warrently. Canon say to send it to them, but get this.....it's to a PO box so can only be sent through the post! Would YOU send a lens worth this much through the postal system and expect to ever see it again?!

Yep Canon.. I probably could have sent it back, but I never trust those things....It is sharp when I'm using it in the studio with Studio flash, but otherwise I'm just not that thrilled with it especially given the price I paid and that it is their "L" lens.

Anyway, love my 60mm! I've had it for 4 years & it's my favorite for everything. I think my next purchase will be a wide angle lens...(have to wait a while).


Then with my camera, I have a 20D that I've had since 2004 and a 40D that I bought earlier this year...Again, I think I should like the 40D better, but I just don't. The color, details, everything to me looks better with my 20D.

Who knows!
