Some Alaska ideas, please?

cellomom

...loves her some "O"
So I'm getting ready to take my mom to Alaska mid-July, and I was wondering if anyone lived in or near Anchorage and could give us some touristy ideas? Maybe some local restaurants that aren't exclusively seafoody (my mom and I both don't eat seafood...weird, again, i know!!!). Maybe some ideas on the cheaper side? I've got some cash stashed for the trip, but I don't wanna blow it all in one place!

We are staying in Anchorage because we wanted to be closest to Mt Mckinley...we may do a train ride (one day there and back) to Denali Park where McKinley is, but even that I'm not sure about. We will have a car, but I've heard maybe it's not safe to drive up to the park on our own?

any ideas, advice, places to recommend in the area???

thanks in advance!!

Hey...Sally...what an awesome trip to go on!! I will talk to my SIL...he was stationed there for about 4 years in the army. I will get back to you as soon as I talk to him!!...and...uuuuuhhhmmmm...can I go???:)

We stayed in Girdwood when we were there. It is about an hour south of Anchoarge down the turn again arm. There is some kind of tide that is kinda cool and if it is a big one the belugas play in it. There are glacier tours out of whittier that are very cool. we did a half day tour and saw 4-5 glaciers. It was pretty awesome. Also there is Portage Glacier. I'll ask my sil who lives there and see what she says. She isn't always the best at getting back to me. When are you going to be there and for how long? She might know of some festivals or what not too.

lol!! I can't help either Sally!!.........now if it was Ayers Rock, or the Barrier Reef or........:)

okay...it has been passed on to her. we'll see what she comes up with. her and my bil are a bunch of pot smoking hippies and their ideas of what is fun are not everybody's ideas of fun. They live in a cabin on a mountain with no electricity, their running water comes from a stream, live in carrharts, that kind of stuff. I had a blast when I was up there, so did Derek and Ethan when they just went on this last trip in April. It is absolutely gorgeous. Get out and about from Anchorage and see the beautiful land up there. It is awesome.

Ona - i want your travel advice. I wish I needed it. :( I had a random thought the other day that I wanted to live down there. I wonder if my x-ray registry is good down there. For some reason I don't think it is.

lol! Clara!! you would LOVE it down here!!! you can pick whether you want to live in the cold part (southern states) or the hotter parts (northern states).......but not sure about the x-ray registry bit though!! :)

you girls are sooo fun!! And Ona, we totally will make it there sometime soon. We have a dear friend who lives in Melbourne and I've promised to come to her wedding when she gets engaged!! :)

Ohhhh, I'm soooo jealous!! Alaska is one of my dream destinations, wow!! You're going to have such a great time, Sally, can I come too???
