Scrap for hire question

clarabear

always chatty at the O!!
So, I have recently been hit up to create a book for somebody but I have no idea about cost and what to charge. Do you charge for the Jpeg images or do you print them out for them?? Do you charge a flat rate for a book or per page? I'm just not sure how to go about the money aspect of it, ya know?? Any thoughts would be appreciated along with links to your own blogs/websites that offer this. Thanks guys!!

Clara have you done a search at DST or just the net? Lots of women at DST do this. I believe the ground rules are up to you for each s4h project. Some people print and some just give out the flattened .jpg file. As to rates, I really don't know. I've seen people charge $15.00 a page and also $5.00 a page or a flat rate for a book of so many pages.

Heres my website Clara, you can see my price lists there.

Please remember when you are doing S4H, it not all about your supplies, think about your conseltation and other communication (be it by telephone or email) with the client, about the time you put into the project, any printing costs, if you are mailing the project there is a mailing fee, even up to the gas you use in your car to get to the post office or whatever.

My price for a single 12x12 page starts at approx $25, I say start because it depends on the client they may require more elements, any brush up on photographs etc, it can go up to as much as $40 for a single page.

As for what to send your client, most definately a print page, sending a Jpeg gives them the opportunity to produce reprints ;)

I charge $10 an hour, plus supplies. Sometimes I feel that's almost not worth it. I usually give them a CD of the images I've scanned for them, but do not give them images of the layouts. Just because I was trying to be careful of any copyright issues...and really no one has ever asked for it. I recently did a video graduation slide show and that totaled about $160. When I did my cousin's scrapbook, I charged $10 an hour for the creation and $2.00 per page for the book (they did 8 x 8). They picked out and bought the book. Theirs ended up being a book and a video and I think I charged them about $225 for "labor". Then the cost of the book was on top of that....I think it was like $35 or something.

Some people have said I could charge more and, occasionally, I've thought about it. But I'm usually creating for family and friends and do it more to be creative and help them create something they love, than to make money.

That's my two cents.

This is so hard. I have looked at prices that other people have set up and it seems like so much, but on the other hand it doesn't seem like that much. I don't want to charge hourly because I can sometimes be really slow and other times be fast, so I think I want to charge per page. So confusing. I know for this one I will probably way under charge just because it will be the first one, but I still need to make some money on it. Thanks for your feedback guys. I appreciate it. Also, this lady works for the state as a social worker so I know I don't want to charge too much because I have a soft spot for them, ya know?
