Ok me getting back in the groove of getting some scrapbooking done I would LOVE to get what I have organized...without it being overwhelming. What are all of you doing?

always chatty at the O!!
I use mostly O stuff, so I have a folder of non-O stuff and a folder of O stuff. Then I separate by designer and put all the kits under the designer...except for element packs. I have all of those in one folder. I also keep a copy of the preview next to each folder so that I can see what's in it...and also put a copy of the preview into a preview folder. I know this sounds confusing but it is pretty easy. I also make sure everything is labeled well. I have nothing labeled as element. Then if I need a frame I can type frame into my browser search and it will pull up all of my frames in that folder I am searching in. I hope that made any sort of sense. I used to try tagging and stuff like that but it ended up making me spend so much time sorting I never actually played with anything.

See that is what I do now. I would love all my frames somewhere, all my papers to a folder, etc. But still know which designer did what. I have a BOAT load of stuff from prior CTs

Some of us have been using Bridge or I hear ACDSee works well. Some Mac users use iPhoto (though I don't want to do that on mine because it duplicates all the files and takes up more space.) You can use those programs to "tag" items with things like "Frame" "Metal" "Brown" etc. That way you can keep your folder structure like what Clara says and still be able to search tags for things.

Susan, on my Mac, I do the organizing mostly like Clara. If I have a designer with a lot of products, they all stay in that designer's folder. I also put a photo of the designer on top of the folder. While they're sorted alphabetically, it's also easy to see the person as well.

Each of my folders within each designer folder also has the preview image ON the folder. If things aren't sorted by designer, they are in my basic categories. Actions, Alphas, Brushes, Christmas, Elements, Frames, Halloween, Kits, Masks, Overlays, Styles, Templates, TextPaths, Textures & Wordart.

I can easily look in my finder for what I want...for the most part. Elements are what moved me to look into ACDSee Mac which I won and now the ACDSee App which is much faster. I also have a hard time remembering some of the neat little layers that come with some layered templates. It's tagging them that has being done bit by bit.

hth!

iPhoto does not have to duplicate files. It CAN be the only storage space for your digi stuff. The best idea then is to have another library for just Digi Supplies. I started that back in 2008 or so but ran into the issue of not being able to see all my keywords at once, and you have to click on the keyword to select it. :( Thus one organizing system went down the tubes.

Bridge continued to crash for me when I tried that.

Organizer which I now have via PSE9 seemed ok but I already had that ACDSee Pro that was taking up real estate on my hd. Both the app and my digi supplies now live on an ehd - backed up of course!

Ever since I got Windows Vista and now Windows 7 I cannot have previews on the folder. It's the one thing I miss about XP.

i can't believe they did what they did to folders in Windows!! i'd like to give the person who thought that would be a great idea a smack upside the head. a total screw-up.

I agree... the new folder view in 7 is very disappointing. I also don't like that you can't force arrange them... in other words if I want to drag my folders into a specific order I cannot do that.. they will only sort per the menu options. :(

My two bits on organizing my stash. I stopped trying to tag every single detail long ago... one thing that works for me is to rename each kit preview to folder and that one image will show in the folder preview in 7... though it is still not a good view. :(
I also tag - but just the preview and only a few tags that work for me.
I also rename items instead of element 1, element 2...etc... I change the name to designer_kitname_elementname (most designers save in this format already, so thank goodness I don't have to do it all the time). Anyway... what I use is windows search. I know it is the lazy way... but I don't have time to tag every single thing I own, nor do I have the time to search through 12,000 folders...

Say I am looking for a ribbon... In my digi stash folder I type in ribbon in the windows search area - after a few moments all my ribbons show up on the screen. ;) I scroll through and find the ribbon I want... and if I want to use more from that specific kit I can right click and select open file location and be taken right to the folder.

Phylis, you swat the left side I'll take the right! I HATE 7 only had it for few months. I don't like change anyway. I still use DOS! And I still use PE 6 tho I have PS and PE 9 on computer.
Back to the subject. I have ACDSee and took a course at Jessica Sprague - well worth the $$. I do kit previews. What I'm trying to organize are my brushes, overlays and transfers.
ACDSee allows you to view the brushes.
I'll take everyone out for dinner when I finish :) think I'm pretty safe with my offer!

Clara, sorry I missed your question on putting the preview image ON the folder.

Find a folder. Open it and open the preview image. Then click on that preview image and then do
CMD-A, CMD-C-, and finally CMD-Q. (Select all, open all, and close all)
Now close the folder.
Right click on the folder and select Get Info
When that panel is open go up to the top blue folder icon, double click the icon, and CMD-V. Paste. Give it a second, and you'll see your folder with the preview image on it.

Sadly, some designers only give you a 200x200 preview but hey..you could always resize it if you need to. However, when you're done, and I ALWAYS do my new purchases as soon as I download them, this process will be like doing it in your sleep.

Your folders will look like this - and isn't that a visual delight?

That is exactly what I do. It is so much less stressful for me.

Maureen...
This sounds easy enough, just curious before I try anything rash... is this a MAC only thing or is this for Win7? I am interested in previews like this. ;)

Thanks
