Need advice for a tablet purchase

The tablet I am using is really old and barely works. I mostly use it for ready ebooks but even running just Kindle crashes it. I'd like to get a new one but I know nothing about brands or features.
This is why I have no idea of what's what in the world of tech: My previous tablet was my MIL's first-gen iPad and was a hand-me-down when she upgraded. The one I have now is an old Samsung that was DH's uncle. He passed away in 2019 and the tablet was already a few years old back then. I've never had to buy my own, I just accepted what was given :D

I'm looking for a budget-priced one and prefer Android since I use Google Docs for a lot of work-related tasks. The only other thing I use it for is reading with Kindle or Hoopla. No art stuff or anything like that.
Eventually. I'd like to get a keyboard to connect to it so I can use it at work since I don't have access to a laptop.

Thanks for any suggestions!

As much as I love Android for phones. I'm all about the iPad for tablets. However, Popular Mechanics lists the Samsung Tab A7 as the best Android option. It's at a good price on Amazon.

I have the one Cindy's linking to. Works fine. But I mainly use it to cast to the TV with Chromecast & surf the net. Plus a couple of apps. I don't have Kindle, so I can't say anything about that.

Thanks! I saved it to my Amazon wish list and will do some more research, see how things fall out. I appreciate you both!

Jumping in because I'm a Mac girl ...

I use Google Docs (and all the other Google apps) and the Kindle app on my iPad mini 6 with no problems at all — it's about 4-5 years old now. I don't use Hoopla, but that App is in the App store too. I didn't get the Mini 7 which was just released because they didn't upgrade it enough to bother changing. The Mini 6 is still available on Amazon for a very good price. Sounds like all you need is the 64 GB Wi-fi. There might be some even better deals during the BF sales.

@Vicki Robinson Thanks so much! I am doing the research now so I can keep my eyes open for the BF sales :)
The iPads are out of my budget now, but maybe next week that might change,

I also looked at some of the Fire tablets...do any of you have experience with them?

Late to the party but I have a Samsung, it's not the latest model but its a beast. I love android tablets, I was like you, always taking the old hand me downs, until Hubby finally bought me this guy brand new 2 years ago. I would look at what Samsung have in your price point that has good reviews, esp with BF coming up.

Oh Dang, @ClaireG I am super glad I didn't see this before I bought the Samsung. I would have looked at that and totally blown up my budget! LOL!!!
I ended up getting a good Black Friday deal on the Galaxy A9+ and so far, it's working fine. As in-- I can read using Kindle and it doesn't crash ;)

Thak you for everyone's input!

I have an iPad air and love it. I use it for traveling during the summers with several navigation apps. I read mail, do banking and get caught up on news while we travel.I use it to read books also. I hardly us it any other time.

Glad you found something in your budget that you are happy with. I'll be upgrading my laptop next year or maybe just a tablet instead, I have time to figure it out thankfully b/c I don't need both but each has pros/cons to the purchase.

I got a Microsoft Surface Pro with a detachable keyboard and stylus a year ago - I love it, runs everything my laptop does.

I'll let you know how I like this one for more "computer-type work" once I use it for that.
