Have you seen the Fat Bears?

It's Fat Bear Week!
I live in the mountains of Northern New Jersey and we have our share of black bears in the forests around here. However-- these bears aren't like my NJ black bears who wander through my yard. A large black bear is maybe 600 lbs, tops. These fat bears are brown bears living in AK and are huge! Twice as heavy as their puny NJ cousins :D

You can Meet the Bears here and if you want to vote, that starts today.

Do you have a favorite? I love the coloring on Grazer and I think that 856 looks like what I imagine a fat bear to be. Grazer is a mama bear so I think I'd choose her as my fave.

I've seen a few posts but haven't delved deeper. Sounds like a fun way to spend some time!

I dont know if its the same cameras, but there was some "fun" the other day where a male mauled a female to death. And it was caught on camera. So crazy! And they are huge!!!! When those browns wander down to the river to fish, you move off and let them have the fish.

@AK_Tracy I was actually going to post about the Fat Bears a few days ago but it was right when the news hit about the mauling. I felt it was a little icky to be excited about voting for the living ones right after the killing. (Yeah I know-- that's Nature but still!)

I feel so sad for the female bear :sad2: :crying1: and I must say that I'm really surprised because it's an uncommon situation, bears are gathering food during this season, but they don't attack to another bear, because they cannot eat it, really rare situation.

This is actually really typical and happens all the time. The bears also do eat what they kill. Its sad but normal. :sad2:

One of the female polar bears at our local zoo died a few years ago due to injuries she suffered from the male polar bear during mating season. The zoo said that while it was tragic, it does happen in the wild. I had never heard that before.

I guess when you have claws like that, its bound to happen. I have seen bear claws (in the hides) and its crazy how big and scary those claws are.
