There is a new privacy setting called "Instant Personalization" that shares data with non-facebook websites and it is automatically set to "Allow." Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites and uncheck "Allow".

And please, all your pictures should be set to "Only Friends". Do you know every friend of every single one of your friends? I don't know why this is one area where people are sooo careless. Can't tell you how many prom photo albums I saw this weekend because of being friends with my young cousin!

You're welcome everyone. When they announced this at their news conference, they were questioned about the privacy. They said that it shouldn't affect privacy. I think I about spit my drink out! And look what section it's under....PRIVACY! Goobers.

Actually, it really depends on how you want to surf the net.

If you are avid net and facebook user then you will not want to uncheck this. It is a "pilot" program involving only three other users - and two of them are yelp and pandora. Since I use both yelp and pandora while I'm browsing facebook then having this setting open allows pandora to set my music tastes to what I'm looking at on facebook - bandsites, etc.

I realize that if you are not an avid facebook user you may not be interested in this feature but it is not the evil privacy scam that this post makes it appear. It's better to be fully informed.

As for the friends only on your photos.. oh yeah!!

I'm not making it an evil privacy scam. I'm informing people that Facebook is automatically sharing your information with these three companies unless you opt out...whether you use the services or not. That's not fair to users. Your private information should only be available if you OPT IN to sharing it. Even congress is getting involved in this matter. While I understand their desire to personalize the web experience, and I understand their desire to draw users (business) by showing them what it can do, it is simply not right to change the terms of use and share information with third party users without permission. And most of the people I know don't understand fully what this pilot means to them.

I'm tech support and teach technology to young students, teachers, and in college courses. My husband is a leader in the field of cyber security. I am well informed.

And incidentally, I said nothing in the first post about an evil privacy scam. I simply posted directions on how to turn the setting off.
