Do you go to bed tired?

May seem like a silly question, but I really love going to bed not completely tired, so I have the energy to read and enjoy a book. Some days I am so exhausted - usually mentally rather than physically - that I am asleep the moment my head hits the pillow, but last night I went to bed before 9pm and spent a wonderful two hours with my Kindle.

What about you?

Typically, I go to bed and read for 20-30 minutes. I need transition time to make my brain chill out before I attempt to sleep. I don't think I could ever read as long as 2 hours though!

I must read in bed before sleeping. No matter how tired I am. How long I read depends on what I did that day and how fast my melatonin kicks in. Usually its an hour. Some nights, but not often it can be 3 hours. Part depends on the book and if I am close to the end. Reading is my minds unwinding and calm so no matter where what or how tired, I read. If traveling it might only be ten minutes but I will read.

I hate going to bed, unless I am sick :rotfl: I used to read for at least an hour, but now I have switched over to listening to the "Nothing Much Happens" podcast if I can't get my brain to shut off :heartpumplove: She writes and reads her own stories and has a wonderful voice! She reads the story through once, and then reads it a second time, more slowly...I usually am able to fall asleep by the end of the episode :)

On most days I am like you, two hours was an exception for me - though I enjoyed it.

O yes, I love to read before I go to bed. Only thing is I never get to go to bed early enough. There always is so much to do at night. Knitting, scrapping, Netflix ....

I know, right? I seem to be busy right before it's bedtime. For some reason my brain seems to think that tidying up the bathroom at 10pm is ideal nighttime activity.

For me it is also a daily habit to read for half an hour in bed ... then my eyes close ..

Have you ever fallen sleep with a book? I've seen it my husband just drop the book on his face and not wake up... but this has never happened to me - when I feel I am falling asleep, I just close the book and get comfortable.

Love this, Tracy - sounds like an awesome routine to get your body ready for sleep - reading for 3 hours is LONG... I remember when I was younger and the story was gripping, I'd read into the early hours... which is partly the reason why I stopped reading really interesting books before going to bed - I just couldn't sleep. Now my bedside reading is mostly biographies, or some other non fiction.

Oh, I can't believe you hate going to bed... Though I do wish we didn't have to sleep - imagine all the time we'd have to do things we love. I've heard of the Nothing Much Happens podcast - I think I even tried it at some point...

I have started a new bedtime routine.....
Tylenol PMs at 7
Sleepytime tea around 8-9
Rummikub on line with my sister until around 10
To bed, to bed, sleepyhead!

This sounds nice... love that you get to do things online with your sister. I imagine the regularity of your routine guarantees a good night's sleep.

I dread going to bed. I've had a sleep disorder since I was a child. I always tell people "I can't sleep on command". That's why I don't like to do "group vacays" or "family trips". Everybody else just goes to sleep and I can't. I remember, as a child, being the only one in the house who wasn't asleep. I used to lay and cry because I couldn't fall asleep like everybody else. I finally found an herbal concoction that works for me, plus I have to use 2 packs of Sleepy Time tea. It takes about an hour to kick in and sometimes it just doesn't. I also take prescription sleep medication and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm often up until 3 in the morning trying to get sleepy. I tell people that I have to "hit the wall" before I go to bed so I can fall asleep. I do listen to a sleep playlist that I listen to on my air pods. I've tried reading, you name it, I've tried it.

Have I fallen asleep while reading? ... very often :sleeping2:... I read on kindle and it goes into sleep mode ...
Luckily for me my husband never falls asleep while reading and he neatly puts my kindle aside ....

Interesting topic!
When we were still working, I listened to audio books in bed for a while to block out DH's snoring, my tinnitus and to force my mind to calm down and listen. Reading was always too tiring for me later on. I have been retired for 2 years and have completely new habits. At first I loved staying up until the early morning and working on the computer or watching TV. Now I love going to bed after the news at around 8:15 p.m. with my laptop under my arm and doing some crafting.:bedtime: I have made it really cozy and can choose between watching TV or scrapbooking. I enjoy the comfort of having my feet up. I always have to share my sofa in the living room with 2 dachshunds. I make sure that they are as comfortable as possible. As a small person, I don't need a lot of space...

I go to bed tired and wake up tired and live the day tired. I think it's just the emotional aftermath of so much stress in the world.
@pachimac There IS a lot of stress in the world these days indeed... living your days tired sounds exhausting...I hope you'll get to relax on the weekend.

@Cherylndesigns Oh, Cheryl, this sounds awful... I never even knew this happened... Are you tired and can't sleep because your mind is racing or are you just not sleepy? Personally, I would LOVE to not need to sleep - oh, all the things I could do in my spare time...

@Su_Sanne You make retirement sound so appealing... and going to bed at 8:15 to make yourself comfortable and do things you want seems like a great routine.

Not every evening, of course! DH and I often do things together or go out. But before I make myself uncomfortable on the sofa and possibly fall asleep, it's a good opportunity for comfort, especially in the dark months. Michael often comes over and reads next to me or plays on the iPad

That was me at childhood sleepovers and Girl Scott camping trips. It felt so awful.

I usually fall asleep on the couch, and then I crawl into bed and continue sleeping.
