Good morning. I am tired but the sun is shining so that is good news. Yesterday was a long, worrying day spent watching over Tat. I woke Caitlyn up at 9 since I knew she wanted to call the vet early. Her alarm had already gone off.
We checked on Tat who was moving slowly and wobbly. She was hiding in the back of the cage and didn't want to come toward us. But she did and took a nugget. She couldn't use her hands to hold it, instead, she nibbled at it off of the ground. Rats typically sit on their haunches and hold food in their hands as they eat so it wasn't a good sign that she wouldn't do that.
Gary brought the medical cage down from the attic (it was still set up from when the babies were supposed to get spayed in March) and Cait put her and Livvie together. Rats need company and it would be more stressful for Tat to be alone than to deal with Olivia running all over her.
The earliest appt she could get was at 5.45 and by noon I was 100% stressing.
Caitlyn typed up two pages of notes and observations for the vet since she could go in with her. The vet said that info, especially the photos of Tat's hands, was so helpful b/c he was puzzled at the different symptoms/behaviors she was showing. He believes that she has a herniated disk in her neck. A couple of days ago, Titania- while she has a delicate name, is not known for her grace and agility- fell out of the cage onto the floor. That might have triggered this. He gave her a cortisone shot and is hoping that it will help. If it doesn't, it is possible that she has a pituitary tumor which sadly common in rats and is untreatable. She doesn't have the characteristics and it is uncommon in rats under 2, so we are really hoping it is the disk.
Cait is very smart too since she had Livvie in the cage with Tat, she asked him to look at her mammary tumor and she has surgery scheduled for next Friday- along with Evie and Imogen's spays.
The receptionist said that she could have it on this Friday and Cait said no way-- one worry at a time!
Today, I am off to pick up groceries at Walmart. It looks nice outside, so I have to decide if I want to work on some scrap pages or go in the yard.
I will obviously be checking on Tat and Caitlyn a lot.
Speaking of Caitlyn--she got her final grades in yesterday-- Straight As!!! Her GPA is 3.96 and is officially smarter than her mama who had a 3.95
Gratitudes:
- that Tat is going to get better and that the vet is crazy-amazing with rats
- sunshine
- (as much as I hate to admit this
) Walmart for having shop from home spots
