Can I pick your brains about yarn and crochet?

I was gifted a bunch of yarn a few years ago and none of them had labels/wrappers on them. I found this yarn that reminded me of my DS's girlfriend's hair ( hehe, I know, that sounds silly!) and thought I might use it to make a scarf for her for Christmas. I *think* it is an acrylic/wool "blend. It's two strands together. One is def. acrylic, the other strand feels like wool, a little bit rough and scratchy
Here's a picture:

Here is what I have crocheted so far:

Because I don't know what kind of yarn it is, I searched Ravelry for patterns using two-strand worsted weight. This is a V -stitch cowl.
I don't like the way it looks. I feel like the "fuzziness" of the yarn and the open stitches make it look messy. Would I do better with a different type of pattern, something with tighter stitches?
@tanteva tagging you in here because I know that you will have some advice (maybe even ''Give it up, Faery you stink at crochet." Fair point! :p )

I'd say you go up a needle size or two ... the opposite of tightening it, that is. Then the fuzziness will have more "room" to spread it's magic in the larger holes in the v-stitch.

but ... I have a pattern in my mind. Will see if I can find it.

This looks better, yeah?

I'm using a 7 mm hook, think that is big enough or should I go bigger?

ETA: Would be nice to include the photo

Also, you may want to join "The Crochet Crowd" on Facebook. Mikey, the guy who runs it, is amazing and has a group that has a wealth of information and they LOVE giving advice!!!

That said - I agree. Going up in size of hook will let the fuzzies spread out.

I won't bore you with more pics, but I went with a 9mm and about 10 rows in, it looks good. I think the slightly smaller hook is better for my erratic yarn tension.
Thanks for all of the help!
