As a writer, I am forced, I believe, to disdain most forms of web-speak. I have never used emoticons, although, I will, occasionally type ": )"; always spaced, because I find the actual characters terribly distracting when I'm reading others' posts. I don't use blinkies. I don't enjoy animations. I don't abbreviate in sentences or deliberately misspell words--you'll never catch me typing "tho," for example.
This isn't to say I object to anyone else doing these things (except emoticons--they're awful!). I think my general dislike comes from the thought--read: certainty--that I will get too used to typing in web-speak. I can just imagine my editor's notes when she finds "tho" and "lol" in the middle of a manuscript!
So, I've remained for years now, terribly out-of-the-loop. I often have to search terms and acronyms up on Urban Dictionary and other sites to find out their meanings--all this just to understand others' forum posts!
I posted the above page last night and received the following comment: asw is your LO.
Of course, I had no idea what ASW meant, so I searched it. There were 134 phrases that can be abbreviated ASW, but I could make none of them fit the topic or sentence. Help! What does it mean?
