I've found great luck using gradients with layer masks to be another great way to do this.

I love using masks. Sometimes I'll duplicate a mask multiple time for a larger photo. I've also combined different masks for the same purpose. Otherwise I don't change them months. But I'm on a roll this month for expanding my digiscrap horizons, so maybe I'll give it a try.
