I use Scrapbook Max. I first used grayscale, then blur, then emboss to end up with this photo effect.

I use Photoshop. I know the photos aren't the best for the purpose of the challenge but the challenge was perfect for telling my story so I tried to stick to the challenge as much as possible. I used the charcoal filter first, the conti crayon on top of that, and then finished with the blur filter on top. Finally I used a gradient mask to mask out the 'offending' parts I wanated in black & white.
