While at Elmendorf AFB Dad was assigned to the 6981st Radio Group Mobile. First activated 8 May 1955 as the 6981st Radio Squadron Mobile they assumed the mission, resources, and manning of the historic 3rd Radio Squadron Mobile. The 6981st RSM was re-designated the 6981st RGM 1 January 1956. Shortly after we left Alaska, the 6981st was re-designated the 6981st Security Group. They went thru several more re-designations until 1 October 1993 when they became the 381st Intelligence Squadron.
An intelligence specialist once described Alaska as a “great big, fat listening post.” At one time the Air Force had a dozen stations with long-range radars scanning radio waves originating in Siberia. The biggest post was at Elmendorf. During the mid-1950s the most secret was Naknek at the foot of the Aleutians. Shemya Island in the Aleutian chain gained the most fame. The air base could intercept, track, monitor, and gather intelligence on Soviet actions.
