Journaling
Mom, John, and I had received our orders on 17 March 1958. A Telegram arrived on 7 April 1958 with our Port of Call at Fort Lawton to travel by ship to Whittier, Alaska. Ten days later Dad was granted moral leave for 15 days to begin on the 29th of April. The original plan was for Dad to help get us to Seattle and then he would fly back to Elmendorf AFB while we took a military troopship. It didn’t work out that way. By the time Dad arrived in Santa Rose things had changed. John was sick with asthmatic bronchitis and the doctor did not want him to travel. He wanted to put him in the hospital. Mom was not having any part of that advice. She wanted to be with Dad. With the doctor's concurrence, it was decided that we could travel as long as Mom and Dad brought along a room humidifier and used it at night. As a result of this stipulation, a series of Telegrams were sent between Dad and the military. The first was sent on the 30th requesting permission for Dad to travel with his family. The request was approved on the 3rd of May.
On the 5th we all loaded into the car and began driving to Seattle. We stopped in Oregon to spend the night. With the humidifier set up, we all settled in for the night. Upon waking the next morning, it was apparent that something wasn't exactly as it should be. There was so much humidity in the air that water was dripping down the walls and off the ceiling. Mom and Dad were frantic grabbing every towel in the room to dry off the walls. Mom has said it took them a good hour to wipe up all the water.
Once the water was wiped up the car was loaded and we headed North to Fort Lawton Army Post, Seattle arriving in the afternoon of the 6th. On the 7th the car was dropped off to be shipped to Alaska. On the 8th we boarded the USNS General M. M. Patrick for a 3-day cruise to Whittier. Dad was required to stand guard duty while we were on the ship.
