In March of 1958, we got our orders to join Dad in Alaska. The paperwork for the move from South Dakota to Alaska did not survive as a result I don’t know the exact sequence of events. I know from Mom’s letter that several items were transported in the car across country and then were supposed to be loaded on the ship we took from Seattle to Alaska, but it wasn’t. Dad took a few items with him when he went to Alaska in November. Our household goods were more than likely picked up before we left South Dakota and put into storage. Part would be left in long term storage until we returned to the States in four years. The other was sent on to Alaska after we arrived.
As you can see from the orders there were a lot of conditions that were required to be followed. Dad’s rank at this point was a staff sergeant, an E-5 which allowed for a privately owned vehicle to be transported at government expense.
