No Parental Control

We've had a huge to-do with my daughter this week about Facebook which has all proved very unsatisfactory and has left us with the realisation that we are completely out of our depth with the whole social media & teenagers thing.

And by chance, Digi Dare #364 this week called for us to give our views on some part of social media - perfect for me to have a bit of a rant!

Ooops, again I've picked a font that is too small to read, so here's my rant:

Shes had the stranger-danger talk, and the spot-the-predator-on-social-media speech and nodded in compliance when we went through our rules for allowing her to have a Facebook account. And yet, we find a conversation between her and some random bloke that is verging on the seriously inappropriate. First up, his account is newly created, yet his profile says hes studied here for years. And theres his strange use of English, despite the very Anglo-Saxon name. Theres his constant personal questions that hes getting Ginny to answer without giving any details about himself. Theres the fact that he wants her to post a close up picture of her face. And perhaps most worrying of all, the fact that he apparently works at a local school to us, which suggests that a) he probably shouldnt be working with children and b) hes targeted her specifically because shes close by.

Needless to say, when we confronted her she exploded in furry, changed her password, deleted the conversation and thus any evidence we might be able to pass onto the police. She refuses to see what we might be so upset about and just thinks were invading her privacy to ruin her life. Shes more secretive than ever, about Facebook, Instagram, Blackberry Messenger, Whatsapp & YouTube, and takes particular care to delete her history and all passwords.

And within a week we find her conversing with another unknown guy.

The genie is out of the bottle and the bottle has been well and truly smashed.

I very much enjoyed reading your journaling and feel for all the frustration you face with a girl growing up in todays connected world. Thanks for sharing, the page is perfect.

this is every parent's nightmare. the internet is such a mixed bag. it makes homework easier and protecting kids harder. thank you for the reminder to be ever vigilant.

Your journaling is so powerful and achingly honest - we moms of teens can SO relate! Your LO is superb!! Going into Faves
