Sally Broughton shared Bills story with us the day his beloved Wendy made her way home to the Lord. In The Salvation Army, we call that final life journey being Promoted to Glory. Wendy was certainly that. And, one day, Bill will make that journey as well. Just not yet.
When Wendy had first been diagnosed with cancer, Bill penned the words and tune to this much loved song. As much as he loved his wife, He knew beyond doubt that he had work to do and he belonged to God. His faith never wavered. Wendy went into a long remission, then one day the cancer returned with a vengeance and she was gone. They were both Sallys dear friends, but Wendy was almost a sister. As Sally stood before us in performance vocal rehearsal, this normally bubbly, bright, spunky woman was so subdued. She told us the story behind the song. Then she said something so profound it will be with me forever.
She said, We have to be very careful in our prayer life and in what we ask for. And we have to be completely committed to living with our prayers being granted. Sometimes, we forget that when we ask for healing, God may choose to give the ultimate healing of Heaven. In doing so, He answers the prayer for healing with a perfect YES. And we must be willing to understand and accept that His yes may be Heaven.? Id never thought of death as the gift of healing before, but I have ever since. Then Sally did something more in character and filled with love. She asked us to sing Wendy home with Bills song. My heart was so full, it was all I could do, but it was the most beautiful rendition I've ever heard.
