Process:
I prepared the photo, which is a copyright-free archival image, by altering it with artsy transfers, something I'll be talking about in a tutorial on the annaBlog at the end of the month.

I moved the photo onto the background and clipped it to a framed mask. I then built the background from a series of papers blended on different modes; on top of that I dragged paper textures which I then used as clipping masks for old sheets of the New York Times newspaperI used the same newspaper sheets to clip to the title and to portions of two of the girls' dresses.

I used a variety of brushes to create the shapes in the back, using fill layers to tweak the color, and also blended brushwork over the photo. I positioned the embellishments, clouds, birds, and threads, then wrote the journaling. Since the journaling was hard to read (and I wanted black text), I lightened the background a little, and then distressed the layout with a brown paper on multiply mode at low opacity, scratching away random parts where lightness was needed. As a last step, I tinted a few of the clouds blue.
Ghostly perfection! Nice mix of dark and light. The clouds lighten it all up, especially with the birds.

Love the journaling and the text overlaying the girls' dresses, beautiful blending!!

This is absolutely amazing! You can use dark colors and tones and make it look so simple to do. NOT for me! LOVE LOVE LOVE your work here!

Your history page is wonderful. I am pondering how to do some of my heritage photos. This inspires me and I hope I can make mine even a small fraction as good as your. Love your earnest story telling.

thank you for the TUT ... i really love those clouds in the back...they are a perfect addition to this layout

Beautiful Heritage page, although I guess not your family, if I read correctly...? I did not realize you were on Anna's team... You must be really busy....

I just left a from commenting on another of your layouts, really jaw-dropping! This one much more tactile and richly layered. Pages like this one are more like digital collage art than scrapbooking.
As for our rights, I believe we face grave threats to our own freedom from within a corporate-owned government that no longer enforces the will of the American people.
