Great layout I love the blocking effect, and it seems that Miko had find his home. I have the same problem with a black dog. However not every photo is really black I notice that when I give a double flash he is blacker, otherwise he becomes gray. And it had also a lot to do with light. When I made a photo direction window he becomes gray. But when I made a photo of the window, the light behind me, he becomes black. Hopes this will helps you.

I have black dogs and cats, and I always have issues with them too, esp their eyes. I'll have to try Marretje's suggestions.
