I'd always thought cormorants were coastal birds but seems they've colonised some inland waters as well and this is near where I live. There it was sunning itself on a rock as cormorants like to do. Their wings aren't waterproof and they have to dry them out if they've been diving for food. They can dive as deep as the fish they’re preying on.

Wonderful design and cool bird! Here on the Atlantic Coast we have tons of Double-Crested Cormorants this time of year. I love to see them perched on pilings (or boats) drying their wings!
