Journaling Unexpectedly we arrived in Bruges on Tuesday. An ideal time to visit the Beguinage again. The daffodils were in bloom...beautiful...
The 'Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde' with white-painted facades and tranquil monastery garden was founded in 1245. Beguines used to live in this piece of world heritage, emancipated women who, although laymen, still led a pious and celibate life.
Today the Begijnhof is inhabited by sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict and single women from Bruges.
There is still the same calm and serene atmosphere...
In addition to the lawn, the Beguinage Church, dedicated to Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, also stands out. The foundations of the church date back to the 13th century. The original building was destroyed in a terrible fire in the late 16th century. Reconstruction followed a few years later. The new interior is sober, as befits the quiet nature of the Begijnhof Bruges, with works of art here and there with a strong baroque impression.
You don't have to be a religious person to discover the unique little world of the Bruges Beguinage. The characteristic white facades give the green courtyard a very peaceful appearance, despite the hordes of tourists that regularly pass through. You get a quiet view of life, which is really unique in our hectic life today. Since 1998, the Bruges Beguinage has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
The entrance gate of the Begijnhof will be closed irrevocably at 6.30 pm.
