I am so thankful to have been young when there were real telephones...with clear connections. When Captain Romance sounded right next door even though he was 200 miles away. No "breaking up" or static! No taking a phone call for granted.

Fifty-some years ago, I lived in Seattle, and Dave attended optometry school in Forest Grove, Oregon. The separation was difficultwe were very lonely sometimes. But every Sunday evening, Dave would buy a roll of quarters and walk to a nearby public phone booth so he could talk to me without roommates eavesdropping. We would talk until his quarters were gone. I can only imagine how cold he got in the middle of winter.

There are many advantages to today's cell phones and Face-time, but nothing even close to being as romantic as our Sunday night calls. Still makes me well up with tears when I think of what a romantic guy I loved then, and still do.
